ABOUT L. M. COLLEGE OF PHARMACY
L. M. College of Pharmacy (LMCP) is a premier pharmacy institute of India that was
established in 1947 with a vision to impart quality pharmacy education. The institute
is managed by Ahmedabad Education Society, a philanthropic trust established in
1935. The college is affiliated to Gujarat Technological University and offers D. Pharm,
B. Pharm, Pharm. D., M. Pharm and Ph.D. programs. The institute is approved by
Pharmacy Council of India, New Delhi, Govt. of India and is affiliated to Gujarat
Technological University, Ahmedabad. The institute is accredited by NAAC with “A”
grade and has been conferred Autonomous status for a period of ten years from 2024-
25 academic year. LMCP is the only pharmacy college in the country to get financial
assistance from Niti Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission to set up the ‘Atal Incubation
Centre’ AIC-LMCP Foundation that focuses on supporting innovators in
Pharmaceutical and Healthcare sector. With the support of highly qualified and
experienced faculty members, a great number of industrialists, researchers and
academicians have emerged from the institute, contributing significantly to
pharmaceutical and healthcare sector in India as well as on the global horizon.

ABOUT THE COURSE


The Certificate Course on Biotechnology in Pharmacological Research is designed to
enable researchers bridge the gap between biotechnology and pharmacology. This
course is meticulously designed to equip students and professionals with the
knowledge required to integrate biotechnology into pharmacological research and
drug discovery. This course will cover foundational concepts in pharmacology and
biotechnology; advanced biotechnological methods including omics technologies and
next generation sequencing; and their applications in drug discovery. Through a
combination of expert-led theoretical learning sessions and practical module,
participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of biotechnology tools in
pharmacological research, fostering a deep understanding of the latest trends and
challenges in the field.

Course commencement: January 2025

Course duration: 60 hours

Online Sessions: Weekdays, 4 to 6 pm

Practical Module: Offline at LMCP (2 days)

Course Examination: March 2025

COURSE OUTLINE
Module 1: Overview of pharmacological research
Introduction to concepts of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics,
efficacy, safety pharmacology, toxicity and drug discovery.

Module 2: Foundations of biotechnology


Detailed insights into concepts of cellular and molecular biology including cell
signaling, cell cycle, cell death, cell based assays, DNA isolation, electrophoresis,
PCR, RNA isolation and electrophoresis, and protein estimation techniques.

Module 3: Applications of biotechnology in drug discovery


Understanding target identification and validation, biomarkers and their utility in drug
discovery.

Module 4: Advanced topics in drug discovery


Insight into newer research tools including omics technologies, gene sequencing and
NGS, gene cloning and recombinant DNA technology, cell and gene therapy.

Module 5: Practicals on cellular and molecular biology techniques


Cell culture technique, cell viability assay, DNA isolation and gel electrophoresis.

Course outcome:
Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:

➢ Develop a comprehensive understanding of pharmacological principles and


diverse elements of drug discovery.

➢ Strengthen their fundamental knowledge of biotechnology (cellular and


molecular biology) tools used in research.

➢ Advance their knowledge of newer techniques and tools used in drug discovery.

➢ Gain exposure to conduct of practicals in cellular and molecular biology.
