Practice Sheet - 6

Topic - Extreme Values & Mean Value Theorem

1. Find the absolute maximum and minimum values of each function on the given
interval.

2
a. f ( x) = x − 5, in − 2 ≤ x ≤ 3
3

b. f ( x ) = x 2 − 1, in − 1 ≤ x ≤ 2

−1
c. f ( x) = , in 0.5 ≤ x ≤ 2
x2

d. f ( x) = 4 − x2 , in − 2 ≤ x ≤ 1

π 5π
e. f (θ ) = sin θ , in − ≤θ ≤
2 6

f. f ( x) = 2 − x , in − 1 ≤ x ≤ 3

g. f ( x ) = xe− x , in − 1 ≤ x ≤ 1

2. Find the extreme values (absolute and local) of the function over its natural
domain, and wherever they occur.

a. f ( x ) = 2x 2 − 8x + 9

f ( x) = x3 ( x − 5)
2
b.

x
c. f ( x) =
x +1
2

d. f ( x ) = 3 + 2x − x 2

e. f ( x ) = x 2 ln x

3. If an even function ƒ(x) has a local maximum value at x = c, can anything be

said about the value of ƒ at x = -c? Give reasons for your answer.
4. If an odd function g(x) has a local minimum value at x = c, can anything be
said about the value of g at x = -c? Give reasons for your answer.

5. Determine the values of constants a and b so that ƒ(x) = ax2 + bx has an abso-
lute maximum at the point (1, 2).

6. Determine the values of constants a, b, c, and d so that ƒ(x) = ax3 + bx2 + cx + d

has a local maximum at the point (0, 0) and a local minimum at the point (1,—1).

7. We know how to find the extreme values of a continuous function ƒ(x) by in-
vestigating its values at critical points and endpoints. But what if there are no
critical points or endpoints? What happens then? Do such functions really exist?
Give reasons for your answers.

8. Find the value or values of c that satisfy the equation

f (b ) − f ( a )
= f ′ (c)
b−a

in the conclusion of the Mean Value Theorem for the functions and intervals

a. f ( x ) = x 2 + 2x − 1, in 0 ≤ x ≤ 1

b. f ( x ) = x − 1, in 1 ≤ x ≤ 3

c. f ( x) = x3 − x2 , in − 1 ≤ x ≤ 2

⎧⎪ x 3 , in − 2 ≤ x ≤ 0
d. f ( x) = ⎨ 2
⎪⎩ x , in 0≤x≤2

9. For what values of a, m , b does the function satisfy the hypothesis of Mean
Value Theorem on the interval [0, 2]

⎧ 3, x=0
⎪ 2
f ( x ) = ⎨−x + 3x + a, 0 < x < 1
⎪ mx + b, 1≤ x ≤ 2

10. It took 14 sec for a mercury thermometer to rise from -19°C to 100°C when it
was taken from a freezer and placed in boiling water. Show that somewhere along
the way the mercury was rising at the rate of 8.5°C/sec.
