Sample Midterm

#2
1. A research team collected data on 𝑛 = 250 students in a statistics course. Their
dependent variable was the student’s score on the final examination, which ranged from
200 to 800 points. The observed average final examination score was 467, with an
observed standard deviation of 107.2 (the divisor in the estimated variance was 𝑛 − 1).
Their independent variable was the score on the first examination in the course, which
also ranged from 200 to 800. The average was 424, with an observed standard deviation
of 81.7. The correlation coefficient between the first examination score and the final
examination score was 0.58.

a. Report the analysis of variance table and the test of the null hypothesis that the slope of
the regression line is zero against the alternative that it is not. Use the 0.10, 0.05, and
0.01 levels of significance.
b. Determine the least-squares fitted equation and give the 99% confidence interval for the
slope of the regression of final examination score on first examination score.
c. Use the least-squares prediction equation to predict the final examination score of a
student who scored 550 on the first examination. Give a 99% prediction interval for this
student’s final examination score.
2. A research team wishes to test the null hypothesis 𝐻0 : 𝜌 = 0 at 𝛼 = 0.005 against the
alternative 𝐻1 : 𝜌 > 0 using Fisher’s transformation of the Pearson product moment
correlation coefficient as the test statistic. They have asked their consulting statistician
for a sample size n such that 𝛽 = 0.01 when 𝜌 = 0.15. What is this value?
3. A research team sought to estimate the model 𝐸(𝑌) = 𝛽0 + 𝛽1 𝑥 + 𝛽2 𝑤. The variable Y
is a measure of educational achievement of a participant observed at age 25 (where a
larger number indicates more achievement); the variable 𝑥 is the measure of the of the
participant’s education achievement at age 15 (where a larger number indicates greater
achievement); and the variable 𝑤 is a measure of the participant’s educational
achievement at age 20 (where a larger number indicates greater achievement). They
observed values of y, 𝑥, and 𝑤 on 672 participants. They found that the variance of Y
was 230.2; the variance of x was 184.2; and the variance of w was 208.2. The
correlation between Y and 𝑤 was 0.55; the correlation between Y and 𝑥 was 0.37; and
the correlation between 𝑥 and 𝑤 was 0.65.

a. Compute the partial correlation coefficients 𝑟𝑌𝑤∙𝑥 and 𝑟𝑌𝑥∙𝑤 .

b. Is a mediation model or an explanation model a better explanation of the observed
results?
c. Compute the analysis of variance table for the multiple regression analysis of Y.
Include the sum of squares due to the regression on 𝑥 and the sum of squares due to the
regression on 𝑤 after including x. Test the null hypothesis that 𝛽2 = 0 at the 0.10,
0.05, and 0.01 levels of significance.
4. A research team studied Y, the protein production of a laboratory animal, and how Y
was affected by the dose of medicine. The research team sought to set the dose of the
medicine so that 𝐸(𝑌) is minimized. They used four doses of the medicine: 0, 1, 2, and
3 units respectively. They randomly assigned 35 animals to dosage 0, 35 to dosage 1,
35 to dosage 2, and 35 to dosage 3. They observed that the average values of Y at each
dosage were 𝑦0• = 217, 𝑦1• = 181, 𝑦2• = 118, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦3• = 68, where 𝑦𝑖. was the
average of the observations taken with dosage 𝑖 = 0,1,2,3, respectively. They also
observed that 𝑠02 = 26,425, 𝑠12 = 19,564, 𝑠22 = 31,950, and 𝑠32 = 22,917, where 𝑠𝑖2
was the unbiased estimate of the variance for the observations taken with dosage 𝑖 =
0,1,2,3, respectively.

Complete the analysis of variance table for these results; that is, be sure to specify the
degrees of freedom, sums of squares, mean squares, F-test, and your conclusion. Test
the null hypothesis that all treatment means are equal using significance levels 0.10,
0.05, and 0.01.
