意事項がすべて英語で放送されます。

The listening test for the Grade 1 examination is about to begin. Listen carefully to the
directions. You will not be permitted to ask questions during the test.
This test has four parts. All of the questions in these four parts are multiple-choice
questions. For each question, choose the best answer from among the four choices written in
your test booklet. On your answer sheet, find the number of the question and mark your
answer. You are permitted to take notes for every part of this listening test.
Now, here are the directions for Part 1. In this part, you will hear 10 dialogues, No. 1
through No. 10. Each dialogue will be followed by one question. For each question, you will
have 10 seconds to choose the best answer and mark your answer on your answer sheet. The
dialogue and the question will be given only once. Now, let’s begin.
(★=男性 A ★★=男性 B ☆=女性 A ☆☆=女性 B)

★No. 1
★★: I heard you were chosen to head up the Chicago office. Congratulations, Debbie.
☆☆: Actually, I decided against accepting the offer. My husband just got a new job in town,
and I don’t want to uproot our kids from school.
★★: Well, I can’t say I’m disappointed. I wasn’t sure how we’d ever get along without you.
☆☆: Thanks for the kind words, Jack. Actually, being able to work with everyone on our
team was one of the factors in my decision, too.
★Question: What do we learn about Debbie?

★★No. 2
☆: Gary, it’s me. I’m afraid I have to work late again.
★: Again? That’s the third time this week! When do you think you’ll get home?
☆: Probably around 9. Listen, Clive’s baseball practice ends at 8:30. Can you pick him up?
★: Well, I’m supposed to be giving your mom a ride to the airport.
☆: Ah, I forgot. Well, I guess he’ll just have to wait for a bit until I get there.
★: He’ll understand. And I’ll pick up some dinner for us on my way back.
★★Question: What will the woman do?

☆☆No. 3
★★: Hi, Lisa. How are you enjoying your violin classes?
☆: They’re good but very demanding.
★★: Yeah, I studied with Mrs. Jackson for years.
☆: I’ve been playing since I was a kid, but she has me working on the basics.
★★: It’s just to perfect your technique.
☆: I know, but she’s such a slave driver!
★★: You do know that she’s the most sought after teacher in New York, and a virtuoso
herself.
☆: That’s true.

★★: It’ll be tough, but if you stick with Mrs. Jackson, you won’t regret it.
☆☆Question: What do we learn about Mrs. Jackson?

☆No. 4
☆☆: I hope you enjoyed your stay at our resort, Mr. Barker.
★: I sure did. My wife and I are thinking of returning in October. If we stayed for an entire
week, would it be possible to get a better deal on our room rate?
☆☆: October is not our peak season, so it’s probably not out of the question. Let me talk to
the manager, and I’ll get back to you before your airport limousine arrives.
★: Thanks, I’d appreciate anything you could do.
☆Question: What does the woman imply?

★No. 5
★★: Did you get a chance to look over the latest draft of my thesis, Professor Jameson?
☆☆: Yes, I did, Walter, and overall it looks pretty coherent and logical. However, I’m
concerned about the websites you cited.
★★: Oh? What’s the problem with them?
☆☆: Some are questionable, written by amateurs. I’d eliminate those and find more
authoritative sources if I were you. Sometimes a really good source takes a bit longer to find.
★Question: Why is the professor concerned?

★★No. 6
★: I can’t believe the government’s planning to raise the consumption tax.
☆: Doesn’t surprise me. The country has been running a deficit for years. Someone’s got to
pay the bills eventually.
★: Well, that somebody’s going to be us. The tax is already 5 percent on anything you buy,
and the proposal is to raise it an additional 1 percent for three consecutive years.
☆: Well, I guess it’s inevitable, but it’ll sure make us think more carefully about what we buy.
★★Question: What does the woman conclude about the tax increase?

☆☆No. 7
☆: Honey, our utility bills are still too high. We need to find more ways to cut our energy
consumption.
★★: But we’ve already been replacing the light bulbs with energy-saving ones. And we put
insulating plastic on the windows to prevent heat loss.
☆: There must be something else we can do.
★★: To be honest, I’m skeptical about how much difference all this’ll make. The only thing
that’s been cut so far is our bank balance!
☆: I’m sure we’ll save in the long run. And we’ll be helping the environment.
☆☆Question: What does the man believe about the energy-saving measures?

☆No. 8
☆☆: What’s wrong with your eye, Lewis?
★: I don’t know, but it’s really itchy. I don’t have insurance, so I can’t afford to go to a clinic.
☆☆: You should try Lens Makers. They specialize in glasses, but I went there for a
prescription when I got an eye infection last year. The eye exam only cost about $25.

★: You’re kidding!
☆☆: You’ll have to pay full price for the medication, though.
★: Well, at least I’ll save something.
☆Question: Why will the man go to Lens Makers?

★No. 9
☆: Hey, David. I haven’t seen you in a while. How’s everything?
★★: Pretty good. We just got back from 10 days in Scotland.
☆: Nice. Was it just you and your wife, or did the whole family go?
★★: We all went. It’s what you might call an annual family project. Every year, we take
turns choosing places we want to experience, and then we go to them together.
☆: Nice idea! Your kids are teenagers now, right? Were they tough to travel with?
★★: Not really. Tempers flared occasionally, but overall I was surprised by how much they
and I enjoyed the whole experience.
☆: Great! Actually, I visited Scotland a few years back, and it was far more expensive than I
expected. The hotel and restaurant costs just about broke the bank. With a family of four,
how on earth did you manage?
★★: Going in the off-season helped, and I made the best of some online hotel deals. The
kids were pretty good at finding bargains such as cheap restaurants and coupons on their
smartphones, too. So, all in all, we managed to avoid overspending.
☆: So, what’s the next adventure?
★★: We’re going to go on a rafting trip on the Colorado River—that’s my son’s idea.
☆: Wow! You know, maybe I should get my family to do a similar project.
★Question: What is one thing the man says?

☆☆No. 10
★: Suzanne, we’ve been asking the board of directors to let us hire more sales and
administrative staff for months. Why are they ignoring our requests? Have you heard
anything?
☆: I assure you, Dan, they’re not ignoring us. Many of our offices are running short-handed
right now. I’m told we definitely plan to boost recruitment when the timing’s right.
★★: But the economy’s finally picking up steam, and our sales volume has increased by
almost 30 percent over last year. When would a better time be?
☆: Sales are up, Josh, but you know that we’ve had to lower product prices to stay
competitive.
★: With all due respect, even taking that into account, our profit margins are quite healthy.
☆: True, but a lot of that is thanks to minimized personnel costs, as well as product
automation and offshoring.
★★: I know what you’re saying, Suzanne, but I think there’s another reason that you’re not
letting on about. Does it have to do with the government’s plan to re-examine corporate tax
rates?
☆: This is off the record, guys, but you’re on the right track. There are many other factors,
too, but ultimately the board is reluctant to approve additional staffing outlays until they have
a better feel for what’s going to happen in that regard.
☆☆Question: What is one thing the woman says?

Here are the directions for Part 2. In this part, you will hear five passages, (A) through
(E). Each passage will be followed by two questions, No. 11 through No. 20. For each
question, you will have 10 seconds to choose the best answer and mark your answer on your
answer sheet. The passage and the questions will be given only once. Now, let’s begin.

☆☆ (A) The Obesity Paradox

Obesity has been shown to increase the risk of a variety of serious lifestyle-related
illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes. Researchers were therefore surprised to
discover that once such an illness occurs, obese patients have higher survival rates than
patients whose weight is normal. In fact, the mortality rate for patients of normal weight was
double that of obese patients. This phenomenon is known as the “obesity paradox.”
Various explanations for the paradox have been put forward. One is based on the fact
that people of normal weight often have a higher percentage of a type of fat known as visceral
fat. This kind of fat is thought to be more dangerous than other types of body fat. This is
because it contains a type of fatty acid that accumulates in and around locations such as the
heart and liver. These organs are not made to store fat, so the presence of the fatty acid can
impair their function, and even lead to organ failure. Further experiments are needed to
confirm the visceral fat theory, but researchers hope to better understand how all types of fat
affect human health.
★Questions
★No. 11 What were researchers surprised to discover in their study of those with serious
illnesses?
★No. 12 Why is visceral fat considered dangerous?

★★ (B) Ancient Forests

The rain forests of Southeast Asia were once believed to have been virgin wilderness
areas untouched by humans until quite recently. But a study in Borneo led by researcher Dr.
Chris Hunt has determined that people have shaped this landscape for millennia. Conducting
the study was not easy; thick tree canopies prevented aerial surveys, and excavations were
pointless because ancient wooden buildings and tools would have long since decomposed.
Instead, Hunt’s team collected pollen, which remains in soil for thousands of years. The
pollen samples found in Borneo contain charcoal, indicating the occurrence of fires. Had the
fires started naturally, the forest would have been repopulated with a wide variety of trees and
weeds. Instead, though, the researchers mostly discovered evidence of fruit trees. This shows
people had been using fire as a way to clear the land to cultivate trees for food.
The team’s findings could help indigenous peoples prove legal ownership of their
lands. Some Southeast Asian countries have laws that deny rain-forest inhabitants land rights
on the basis that they are nomadic peoples who make no lasting change to their environment.
Now, the discovery that indigenous peoples actively managed forests for thousands of years
may give tribes the evidence they need to hold onto their lands.
☆Questions
☆No. 13 What did Dr. Chris Hunt and his team discover about the rain forest in Borneo?
☆No. 14 According to the speaker, what might the team’s findings allow indigenous
peoples to do?

☆ (C) Crime Fighting Through Crowdsourcing

Thanks to the extensive reach of the Internet, many organizations can solve complex
problems by drawing on the knowledge and creativity of the general public. This approach,
called crowdsourcing, is now being used to fight crime. For example, after a sports-related
2016 年度第 2 回検定一次試験(1 級) 4 公益財団法人日本英語検定協会
無断転載・複製を禁じます
riot in Vancouver, Canada, authorities used photographs and videos submitted by local
citizens to arrest more than 200 people who had burned cars and damaged local-business
properties. The approach was highly effective in this case. But law enforcement officials point
out that it is not suitable in every situation, as the police can get overwhelmed trying to follow
up on all the information they receive.
Citizens’ groups in Central America have also been using crowdsourcing. In
Guatemala, where many people are skeptical about the authorities’ ability to reduce crime
rates, a crowdsourcing website called Alertos has been gaining popularity. Witnesses to
crimes anonymously submit the time, nature, and location of illegal activities they observe.
From this data, Alertos generates real-time maps that show trouble spots to avoid. However,
Alertos contributors are also told on the site that they should report incidents to the police, as
Alertos itself cannot investigate crimes or pass on reports to the authorities.
★★Questions
★★No. 15 Why is crowdsourcing sometimes viewed as a problem by law enforcement
officials?
★★No. 16 What is the aim of the Alertos website?

★(D) Hannibal at Cannae

In 218 BC, the Roman Empire was invaded by an army commanded by the famous
general Hannibal. Hannibal had been sent by the rival Carthaginian Empire, and he crossed
the European Alps with an army that included the world’s most elite horse cavalry and even
enormous war elephants. It is widely documented that Hannibal’s arrival took the Roman
Empire by surprise. However, many accounts overlook the severe losses that Hannibal’s army
suffered during its epic journey across the mountains. In fact, by the time of the famous Battle
of Cannae in 216 BC, Hannibal’s men were at a significant numerical disadvantage.
Before the battle, Hannibal ordered his men into a long line with his horse cavalry at
either end. The Romans were in a shorter line. Hannibal was relying on his horsemen, who
were superior to the Roman cavalry. After overcoming the Roman horsemen, Hannibal’s
cavalry were ordered to pass behind the enemy forces. They then turned and charged the
Romans from the rear. This caused widespread panic, allowing Hannibal’s army to completely
encircle the Romans. With no possibility of retreat, the Roman army was almost completely
destroyed, and the Battle of Cannae is now remembered as one of history’s most brilliant
military victories.
☆☆Questions
☆☆No. 17 What problem did Hannibal face at the Battle of Cannae?
☆☆No. 18 How did Hannibal achieve victory at the Battle of Cannae?

☆☆ (E) Spotlight on Hydraulic Fracturing

In an energy-hungry world, hydraulic fracturing is often seen as a way to unlock vast
new supplies of natural gas. Commonly known as “fracking,” it is a complicated drilling
method that pumps water containing chemicals at high pressure into rocks underground so
that the natural gas there can be accessed. However, environmental groups question whether
the extracted fuel is worth the potential consequences. One concern is that fracking has been
linked to groundwater contamination. Fracking also uses massive amounts of water, and
critics claim this is an extremely inefficient use of a resource often in short supply. In fact,
about half of the fracking sites drilled in the US since 2011 are in areas vulnerable to drought.
In response, some fracking companies have become interested in new
water-treatment technologies. This has allowed several small, clean-energy companies to use
fracking to test innovations to see if they can be commercially viable for both fracking and

other industries. For example, one such company is conducting pilot tests of a water-filtration
system at fracking sites. The company plans to use this experience to convince companies in
other fields, such as food and beverage wastewater reprocessing, to adopt the system on a
large scale.
★★Questions
★★No. 19 What is one concern that environmental groups have about fracking?
★★No. 20 What does the speaker say about the clean-energy companies?

Here are the directions for Part 3. In this part, you will hear five passages, (F) through (J).
The passages represent real-life situations and may contain sound effects. Each passage will
have one question, No. 21 through No. 25. Before each passage, you will have 10 seconds to
read the situation and question written in your test booklet. After you hear the passage, you
will have 10 seconds to choose the best answer and mark your answer on your answer sheet.
The passage will be given only once. Now, let’s begin.

☆(F)You have 10 seconds to read the situation and Question No. 21.
★Redbrook Community College provides a variety of art courses for beginners. The
Introduction to Art course, available either on Tuesday or Friday mornings for $250, will
teach you the fundamentals of composition and technique. A second course, Photography Art
Fundamentals, is held on Tuesday nights for $150. You will need a digital camera, or you can
rent one for an extra $50. In this course, you will be introduced to the world of artistic
photography, learning how to create your own beautiful artistic photographs. You can also
learn how to capture spectacular scenes in nature with our Nature Painting course. This runs
on Sunday and costs $180. Our Portrait Painting course provides a grounding in the
techniques necessary to create portraits. The course runs all day on Saturday for $190. The
college provides all materials for the painting courses.
☆Now mark your answer on your answer sheet.

★★(G)You have 10 seconds to read the situation and Question No. 22.
☆We’ve made several inquiries regarding your cancellation. The plane ticket and hotel were
booked as nonrefundable, but because of your circumstances, we’ve been able to obtain a 25
percent refund on your airfare and resort deposit. I’m sorry it’s taken so long to resolve this.
As a token of appreciation for your patience, we’d like to offer you a $100 credit toward your
next hotel booking through us. I’ll send you an e-mail containing a promotional code that you
can use on our booking website. The credit expires on December 31, which is three months
from now, but you can use it to book your hotel up to a year in advance. There’s no minimum
stay, but of course room availability depends on your booking dates. If you need to book a
plane ticket, too, please contact us, but remember that the credit is not valid for airfares.
★★Now mark your answer on your answer sheet.

☆☆(H)You have 10 seconds to read the situation and Question No. 23.
★★We have three communities here at Crystal Creek. First, we have the Rosewood Suites
which come with full kitchens, but people who choose this option can also use the dining hall
when they don’t feel like cooking. Then we have the Maple Suites. They are not equipped
with cooking facilities but are located close to the main dining hall. Maple is the most popular
option, and is set in nice gardens, so it has a waiting list of eight months. We do have a few
vacancies in Rosewood, though. We also have two assistance packages depending on
residents’ needs. Package A comes with basic services such as housekeeping. Package B is

more comprehensive and includes assistance with bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene.
Finally, if your father needs full-time care, we offer the Total Care Plan. This is only available
at the specially built Briar Suites. Whichever option you choose, your father will be in good
hands.
☆☆Now mark your answer on your answer sheet.

★(I)You have 10 seconds to read the situation and Question No. 24.
☆☆Your house has been on the market for two months, but we haven’t gotten any serious
offers. Since you said you’re not willing to lower your asking price, I suggest you do more
work on the place. Painting the interior was a good move, and I think the house looks better
now. But those old chandeliers could be updated. It would only take a few hundred dollars to
swap them for more-contemporary lighting. Also, the triple-paned windows you have are a
good selling point since they cut the road noise and boost insulation, but you could replace the
wood frames around the panes as they look a bit old. That would cost about $1,500. You could
also consider putting a few thousand dollars into replacing some of the built-in appliances,
such as the oven, in the kitchen. Anyway, let me know what you do, and I’ll update the
information on the website.
★Now mark your answer on your answer sheet.

☆(J) You have 10 seconds to read the situation and Question No. 25.
★We’ll use three books for the class: the Physics Today textbook, Introduction to Quantum
Physics, and finally, a fascinating little book called Anomalies in Physics. Purchase of Physics
Today is mandatory. You can purchase it new for $80 or used for around $50 at the student
bookstore. There are less expensive second-hand copies available online at recycledtexts.com,
but you will need to allow up to three days for delivery. Be sure to bring the textbook to the
next class. You’ll also be reading assigned sections of the other two texts. You can read these
two texts at the library, where I keep four copies on hand. Another option would be to make
copies of relevant pages there. The exams are based heavily on the material in Physics Today,
though they will also include questions drawn from the other reading assignments as well as
my lectures. You can refer to the online syllabus for more details.

Finally, here are the directions for Part 4. In this part, you will hear an interview. The
interview will be followed by two questions, No. 26 and No. 27. For each question, you will
have 10 seconds to choose the best answer and mark your answer on your answer sheet. The
interview and the questions will be given only once.

★★Now, let’s listen to the interview. This is an interview with Robert Williams, who helped
start a charity cycling team in Japan.

Interviewer (I): Robert, thanks for coming here today.

Robert Williams (RW): Great to be here, Chris!
I: I understand that you’ve raised money for various charities. So, how do you decide which
charities to support?
RW: As the cycling team was formed a year or two after the tsunami in 2011, we thought it
would be fitting to raise some money for Tohoku relief. What we’ve tried to do is ensure that
the charities we support can offer us sustainable projects. In other words, not just a one-off,
“Let’s use the money to buy some water and food,” but also to see that this money is going to
be used to develop, or to recover, in some way, from the, from the disaster. But our focus is, is
2016 年度第 2 回検定一次試験(1 級) 7 公益財団法人日本英語検定協会
無断転載・複製を禁じます
moving away from Tohoku this year, and we’ll be supporting children alone this year through
a children’s charity. And we feel that that will offer us more scope to raise more money,
because obviously children tug on the heartstrings. But also it’s because we’re going to
support children in children’s homes in Japan, that are abused, neglected, or orphaned.
I: Now, some people might argue that an industrialized, wealthy country shouldn’t need
charities. What do you think about that?
RW: Certainly, when I asked my friends in England to sponsor me to ride 500 kilometers to
raise money for a children’s home, or somebody to rebuild the homes in Tohoku, they, the
first reaction is, well, Japan is one of the wealthiest nations on Earth, what do you need my
money for? But like any, any government, small or large, they have to prioritize where they
put their money. It’s up to the government as to how they prioritize their budget.
I: Do you think enough is being done to promote cycling lanes, or, or cycle safety, in Japan?
RW: Well, Japan of course is a, is very, very famous for cycling—there’s an awful lot of
people that do cycle. But one thing that really worries me as a daily commuter on a bicycle is
the lack of cycling proficiency. And in my country, in the UK, it’s illegal to cycle on the
sidewalk, or pavement as we call it, so that was a surprise to me. Recently, I’ve seen a few
more bicycle lanes come up in Tokyo, but literally the, they are only 500 meters long. That’s
not going to help anybody to be safer on the roads or on the pavements. But with the
Olympics coming up, I am hopeful that, that more focus will be given to cyclists.
I: What do you think the general attitude toward charities is in Japan?
RW: I’ve certainly found that it’s been much easier for us to raise money by asking foreign
companies in Japan than Japanese. But it may not be the fact that Japanese are not charitable,
it’s just that there’s a lot more red tape and discussion and decisions that take longer to be
made than in foreign companies. Also, I think the general attitude towards fund-raising is
different. Foreigners will go and ride a bike, or run a marathon, and that is sufficient for their
friends to sponsor and support them for whatever cause they choose. Whereas in Japan, it’s
probably not considered necessary to do anything of an endurance nature to ask for a
charitable donation.
I: Well, that was really inspiring, Robert, thank you.
RW: My pleasure. Thank you for your time.
★★Questions
★★No. 26 What is Robert’s opinion regarding the role of charities in Japan?
★★No. 27 What is one thing Robert mentions about raising money in Japan?
