Text Report on Butterflies

By: Nurull Azmi Maulida, Restie Meylandari Poetri, Rizma Zaskya and Vefyta Yessica T.N

1. Characteristics:
Butterflies are winged insects known for their vibrant colors and the beauty of their wings. Their
body size varies, ranging from very small to quite large. The body of a butterfly is divided into
three main parts: the head, thorax, and abdomen. They have two antennae used to sense their
surroundings, as well as compound eyes that allow them to see clearly. Butterfly wings are
covered in tiny scales that give them their colors and patterns.
2. Latin Name:
Butterflies belong to the order Lepidoptera, derived from the Greek words "lepidos," meaning
scale, and "ptera," meaning wings. A well-known butterfly species is Danaus plexippus,
commonly known as the monarch butterfly.
3. Place of Origin:
Butterflies can be found almost all over the world, except in extremely cold polar regions. They
are very common in tropical and subtropical areas, where warm temperatures support their
development. Some species, like the monarch butterfly, are known to migrate thousands of
kilometers in search of warmer climates.
4. Diet:
The primary food source for adult butterflies is nectar from flowers. Using their long proboscis,
butterflies suck nectar from flowers. In addition to nectar, some butterflies also consume tree sap,
sweat, animal tears, and even mud to obtain the minerals they need. In the larval stage
(caterpillar), butterflies typically feed on the leaves of specific plants that are often unique to
each species.
5. Habits:
Butterflies are diurnal creatures, meaning they are active during the day. They are often seen
flying from flower to flower in search of food. Butterflies are also known for their
thermoregulatory behavior, where they warm their bodies by basking in the sunlight before
starting their daily activities. The process of metamorphosis is also a key habit in the life cycle of
a butterfly, involving four main stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult
(imago).
6. Life Cycle:
The life cycle of a butterfly begins with an egg, usually laid on a leaf by the female. After a few
days, the egg hatches into a larva or caterpillar, which then feeds on the leaf to grow. After
reaching a certain size, the caterpillar enters the pupal stage, where it transforms into a chrysalis
and undergoes metamorphosis until it finally emerges as an adult butterfly.
Butterflies play a crucial role in ecosystems as pollinators. Their beauty is often symbolized in
various cultures, representing transformation and the natural beauty of the world.
