Fieldwork Exercise No. 5 Obstructed Distance
Fieldwork Exercise No. 5 Obstructed Distance
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. INSTRUMENTS AND ACCESSORIES: 30-m or 100-ft steel tape, chaining pins, range poles,
pegs or hubs.
B. PROCEDURE:
1. By Swing Offsets Method.
To find the distance AB by the swing offset method, the head chainman attached
the end of the tape to one end of the line as at B and describes an arc with
center B and radius 100 m. The rear chainman stationed at A lines in the end of
the tape with some distant object as 0 and directs the setting of pins at points
a and b where the end of the tape crossed line A0. A point C midway between a b
lies on the perpendicular CB. A pin is set at C, and the distances BC and CA are
measured to obtain the necessary data for computing the length of AB.

3. By Similar Triangles Method.
Let C be a point from A and B are visible. AC and BC are measured. CD and CE
bears to CB: that is CD/CA = CE/CB. It will generally be convenient to make this
a simple ratio such as 1/2 of 1/3. The triangles ACB and DCE are similar. DE is
measured and AB is computed.
