LISTENING EXERCISE

Name : Wachida Afa Rizki

THE 1ST VIDEO

Architecture is the art and science of designing and constructing buildings.

Art : Architecture as the product of architectural work: buildings, collectively

Science : Architecture as a style or method of building characteristic of a people, place, or

time

Designing : Architecture – as the profession of designing buildings and other habitable

environments

Constructing : Architecture – as the conscious act of things resulting in a unifying or coherent

structure

The term theory of architecture was originally simply the accepted translation of the latin
term. Ratiocinatio: as used by Vitruvius, to differentiate intellectual from practical knowledge in
architectural education, it it has come to signify the total basis for judging the merits of buildings
or building projects.

A building ca be designed only by a continuous creative, intellectual dialec between

imagination and reason in the mind of each creator.

Scope of theory of architecture:

1. Includes all that is presented in the handbook of architects

2. Includes legislation (laws), norms and standards, rules and methods
3. Includes miscellaneous and “unscientific” elements

Design theory:

- Theory does NOT necessarily PRECEDE design

- STYLE

Architectural theory is vast and diverse, and encompasses at least three main areas:

1. THEORY of ARCHITECTURAL TECNOLOGY: principles of structure, ventilation,

drainage, lighting, etc.
2. THEORIES of ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY: social phenomena and patterns,
linguistic analyses, analyses if physical artifacts, etc.
3. THEORIES of ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN: organizational strategies, design
methods, spatial concopts, aesthetic judgments, etc.

THE 2ND VIDEO

Misconceptions are what usually keeps people from even trying to get into architecture
and design.

Myth 1, “I am not a creative person.” or, “I’m not just born creative.” People are not born
creative. People become creative. And the same way, we can try train our bodies to get stronger
and faster, we can create train our brains to be more creative. And we’re gonna do a lot of this in
this course. So stay tuned in the meantime you can safely say to yourself, “I’m not a creative
person.” And then you will see that you are right.

Myth 2, “ I wish I studied architecture but I don’t know how to draw.” What do I need to
become a designer? And I would say that first art that you just need to have a curiosity. Curiosity
about the world, and the way would days, and the way world could be. If you have that curiosity,
I’m sure you will make a relly good designer
