Psychology Case Study

Project

Standard Progressive Matrices

(SPM)

NAME: Asghar Ali

CLASS: XII F
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I am sincerely thankful to my Principal, Neeraj Bhargava Sir, and
my teacher, Mr. Dharmendra Sharma, for providing me with the
opportunity to work on this enriching project focused on the
Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM). Their invaluable support
and guidance have played a vital role in the successful
completion of this study.

I would also like to express my gratitude to my parents and

friends for their unwavering encouragement and assistance
during my research. This project has not only deepened my
theoretical knowledge of SPM but has also laid a strong
foundation for future research and academic pursuits.
INTRODUCTION:
Intelligence is the single most factor which determines the
success and achievement of a person. Some
psychologists interpret intelligence as a general ability
which can affect a person’s thinking and actions. Some
others hold that intelligence is a composite ability made
up of different types of abilities. It is the capacity to apply
and acquire knowledge.
Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) test was
constructed to measure the eductive component of g as
defined in Spearman’s Theory of Cognitive Ability.
Eductive ability is the ability to forge new insights, the
ability to perceive and the ability to identify relationships.
This ability helps the individual to generate new, largely
non-verbal, concepts which make it possible to think
clearly. According to Spearman, g has a second
component, reproductive ability. It is the ability to recall,
and use, a culture’s store of explicit, verbalized concepts.
SPM is a test of observation and capacity for clear
thinking and accurate intellectual work. The SPM was
developed for use in homes, schools and work places, as
well as in laboratories. It was originally designed to cover
the widest possible range of mental ability and equally
useful with persons of all ages; irrespective of their
education, nationality or physical conditions.
The SPM consists of 60 problems divided into 5 sets of 12
problems each. The order of the problems provides the
standard training in the method of working. The problems
are in such a way that it progressively becomes more
difficult.
The test can be used as an individual self-administered
test or a group test. The test is designed to provide a
reliable estimation of a person’s capacity to think clearly
when allowed to work steadily. A person’s total score
provides an index of intellectual capacity.
