1)A doctor is called to see a sick child.

The doctor has prior information that 90% of sick


children in that neighborhood have the flu, while the other 10% are sick with 1 measles. Let F
stand for an event of a child being sick with flu and M stand for an event of a child being sick
with measles. Assume for simplicity that F ∪ M = Ω, i.e., that there no other maladies in that
neighborhood. A well-known symptom of measles is a rash (the event of having which we
denote R). Assume that the probability of having a rash if one has measles is P(R | M) = 0.95.
However, occasionally children with flu also develop rash, and the probability of having a rash if
one has flu is P(R | F) = 0.08. Upon examining the child, the doctor finds a rash. What is the
probability that the child has measles?

2) You take an exam that contains 20 multiple-choice questions. Each question has 44 possible
options. You know the answer to 10 questions, but you have no idea about the
other 1010 questions so you choose answers randomly. Your score Xon the exam is the total
number of correct answers. Find the PMF of X. What is P(X>15)?

3) The average number of acres burned by forest and range fires in a large New Mexico county is
4,300 acres per year, with a standard deviation of 750 acres. The distribution of the number of

4) A government agency was charged by the legislature with estimating the length of time it
takes citizens to fill out various forms. Two hundred randomly selected adults were timed as
they filled out a particular form. The times required had mean 12.812.8 minutes with standard
deviation 1.71.7 minutes. Construct a 90%90% confidence interval for the mean time taken for
all adults to fill out this form.

6) A gambler plays a game that involves throwing 3 dice in a succession of trials. His winnings
are directly proportional to the number of sixes recorded. If the dice are fair, what is the

7) A psychologist claims that the number of repeat offenders will decrease if firsttime offenders
complete a particular rehabilitation course. You randomly select 10 prisons and record the
number of repeat offenders during a two-year period. Then, after first-time offenders complete
the course, you record the number of repeat offenders at each prison for another two-year
period. The results are shown in the following table. At 0.05 significance level, can you support
the psychologist’s claim?

Do the results conform the expectation?
