The poem Desiderata by Max Ehrmann is a timeless guide for living a peaceful
and fulfilling life. The title, meaning “things desired” in Latin, reflects its
purpose of offering wisdom. The poet begins by encouraging us to stay calm and
composed in a chaotic world, finding peace in silence. He advises maintaining
good relationships with others while staying true to ourselves.

The poet emphasizes honesty and listening to other’s stories, even those who
seem less knowledgeable, as everyone has value. He warns against associating
with aggressive people, as they disturb inner peace. Comparing ourselves to
others is discouraged, as it can lead to feelings of vanity or bitterness. Instead,
we should celebrate our achievements and focus on personal growth.

The poem also teaches us to be cautious in our professional dealings while

recognizing the goodness and heroism in people. Ehrmann stresses the
importance of being genuine, especially in love, which he describes as eternal
and resilient, even in challenging times.

As we age, the poet advises gracefully accepting the wisdom that comes with it.
He highlights the need to develop inner strength to face misfortunes and avoid
unnecessary fears, which often arise from fatigue or loneliness. The poem
reminds us that everyone is part of the universe and has a purpose, even if life’s
meaning is unclear.

Ultimately, the poet encourages us to find peace with ourselves, with God (in
whatever way we perceive Him), and with the world. Despite its hardships, life
is beautiful and worth cherishing. The poem ends with a simple yet profound
message: “Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
