Name of the Company:

Wipro Technologies Limited

Domicile:
Bangalore, India

Registered Office Address:

Sarjapur Road, Bangalore, India

Year of Incorporation:
29 December 1945

Type of Company:
Public Ltd.

Nature of Business:
Wipro (stylized in lower case as wipro) is an Indian multinational corporation
that provides information technology, consultant and business process services. It is one of
the leading Big Tech companies.

History of Company:

Wipro is India's third-largest information technology company. Like its rival Indian IT
service providers, Wipro is a major IT business that operates around the world. The company
has over 150,000 employees across the world, and posts about 80% of its sales outside India.

Wipro's beginning was very different to other major Indian IT companies. It started as a
vegetable oil producer in 1945. Azim Premji, the company's current chairman, became the
head of the company in 1966 following the sudden death of his father. Under his leadership,
Wipro broadened into other areas of business. The company entered the IT industry in the
1980s. It gradually shifted its emphasis from hardware production to offshore software
development, building its foundation as a major IT company.

1
Premji owns the majority of the company's shares. Non-IT businesses, including hydraulic
cylinder manufacturing and household product operations, are currently managed by Wipro
Enterprises, a group company.

Early years
The company was incorporated on 29 December 1945 in Amalner, India, by Mohamed
Premji. In 1966, after Mohamed Premji's death, his son Azim Premji took over Wipro as
its chairperson at the age of 21.

Shift to IT
During the 1970s and 1980s, the company shifted its focus to new opportunities in the IT
and computing industry, which was at a nascent stage in India at the time. On 7 June 1977,
the name of the company changed from Western India Vegetable Products Limited, to Wipro
Products Limited. In 1982, the name was changed again, from Wipro Products Limited to
Wipro Limited. In 1999, Wipro was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.[citation
needed] In 2004, Wipro became the second Indian IT company to earn US$1 billion in
annual revenue.

In 2012, Wipro demerged its non-IT businesses into a separate company called Wipro
Enterprises. Prior to this demerger, these businesses, mainly in the consumer care, lighting,
furniture, hydraulics, water treatment, and medical diagnostics, contributed about 10% of
Wipro's total revenues.

In March 2023, Wipro opened its American international headquarters at Tower Center
in East Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

Origin:
In 1945 Wipro Ltd. was founded in Amalner, Maharashtra by Mohamed Hasham Premji.
Initially, the company was set up as 'Western India Palm Refined Oils Limited' and was
involved in the production of vegetable and refined oils.

The company was incorporated on 29 December 1945 in Amalner, India, by Mohamed

Premji. In 1966, after Mohamed Premji's death, his son Azim Premji took over Wipro as its
chairperson at the age of 21.

Promoters:
The promoters of Wipro Technologies are the Azim Premji family. Azim Premji is the
founder of Wipro and has played a significant role in the company's growth and success. He
served as the Chairman of Wipro and was actively involved in the company's operations.

Azim Premji stepped down as the Chairman of Wipro in July 2019, and his son, Rishad
Premji, took over as the Chairman of the company. Rishad Premji has been associated with
Wipro for many years and has held various positions within the company.

2

Collaboration:

In order to achieve Customer centricity, Collaboration and Team work are key enablers.
For Consumer Goods (CG) organizations, the eco system of partners, retailers, manufacturers
need to align together to changing consumer needs and yet achieve their individual goals.
Let’s take a trade promotion example, where a promotion runs into trouble because stocks
are not available. In fast selling CG, out-of-stock situations can result in permanently lost
sales for the manufacturer. The urgency and accuracy with which the communication
happens across the stakeholder eco-system can spell the difference between success and
failure. Is the retailer speaking to the manufacturer in real time? Is the manufacturer updating
the value chain and the partner eco system based on demand? How’s the consumer being
engaged with to avoid loss to competition?

Take a completely different situation where organizations are setting up Shared Services
groups for various functions across Finance, IT, HR, Procurement, Transportation. Clearly
the benefits are immense by streamlining the processes and standardization while giving
regional business flexibility. Having said that, unless there is solid collaboration between the
“Function”, and the “Geography” and the “Business Units/Brands”, no centralization strategy
will truly work. It is also critical to enable a platform for “joint problem solving” especially
when the information intensity is high and IT complexities need to be managed.

In both the above examples, it is important to have mutually defined KPI’s that can be
measured and improved to result in economies of scale, cost savings, and higher business
agility to serve the consumer better. Clear communication processes and tools with free flow
of insights lead to effective collaboration and partnership. Take the inroads a company like
Keurig Green Mountain has made by partnering with multiple leading organizations such as
Coca-Cola and Campbell’s. It is the perfect example of Innovation and Collaboration with
the eco system aligned to consumer needs.

12
Collaboration and Team work are as important in our daily lives and everything we do. A
classic example is one of the best Soccer (football) games I watched earlier this month. The
best player was the person who made fantastic passes that led to 2 goals for the winning
team. There is no substitute to collaboration irrespective of the industry or role so make it a
habit!
