Assignment (0606)

Name: ___________________________ Class: S3- ___ Date: ____________

1 The polynomial 𝑃(𝑥) = (2𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 + 𝑘) − 12, where k is a constant.

(a) Write down the value of 𝑃(−𝑘). [1]

(b) When 𝑃(𝑥) is divided by (𝑥 + 3) the remainder is 23. [2]

Find the value of k.

(c) Using your value of k, show that the equation 𝑃(𝑥) = −25 has no real [3]
solutions.
2 (a) Given that (𝑥 − 2) is a factor of 𝑎𝑥 ! − 12𝑥 " + 5𝑥 + 6, use the factor theorem [2]
to show that 𝑎 = 4.

(b) Showing all your working, factorise 4𝑥 ! − 12𝑥 " + 5𝑥 + 6 and hence solve [4]
4𝑥 ! − 12𝑥 " + 5𝑥 + 6 = 0.

3 The polynomial 𝑃(𝑥) = 2𝑥 ! − 3𝑥 " + 𝑞𝑥 + 56 has a factor (𝑥 − 2).

(a) Show that 𝑞 = −30 [1]

(b) Factorise 𝑃(𝑥) completely and hence state all the solutions of 𝑃(𝑥) = 0. [4]

2
4 The polynomial 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 ! − 15𝑥 " + 𝑏𝑥 − 2 has a factor (2𝑥 − 1) and a remainder
of 5 when divided (𝑥 − 1).
(a) Show that 𝑏 = 8 and find the value of a. [4]

(b) Using the values of a and b found in part (a), express 𝑓(𝑥) in the form [2]
(2𝑥 − 1)𝑔(𝑥), where 𝑔(𝑥) is a quadratic factor to be found.

(c) Show that the equation 𝑓(𝑥) = 0 has only one real root. [2]

3
5 (a) Given that (𝑥 + 1) is a factor of 3𝑥 ! − 14𝑥 " − 7𝑥 + 𝑑, show that 𝑑 = 10. [1]

(b) Show that 3𝑥 ! − 14𝑥 " − 7𝑥 + 10 can be written in the form [2]
(𝑥 + 1)(𝑎𝑥 " + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐), where a, b and c are constants to be found.

(c) Hence solve the equation 3𝑥 ! − 14𝑥 " − 7𝑥 + 10 = 0 [2]

6 It is given that 𝑓(𝑥) = 6𝑥 ! − 5𝑥 " + 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏 has a factor of (𝑥 + 2) and leaves a

remainder of 27 when divided by (𝑥 − 1).
(a) Show that 𝑏 = 40 and find the value of a. [4]

4
(b) Show that 𝑓(𝑥) = (𝑥 + 2)(𝑝𝑥 " + 𝑞𝑥 + 𝑟), where p, q and r are integers to be [2]
found.

(c) Hence solve 𝑓(𝑥) = 0. [2]

7 (a) On the axes below, sketch the graph of 𝑦 = (𝑥 − 2)(𝑥 + 1)(3 − 𝑥), stating the [3]
intercepts on the coordinate axes.

(b) Hence write down the values of x such that (𝑥 − 2)(𝑥 + 1)(3 − 𝑥) > 0. [2]

5
8 (a) On the axes below, sketch the graph of 𝑦 = 5(𝑥 − 2)(𝑥 + 1)(3𝑥 − 2), stating [3]
the intercepts on the coordinate axes.

(b) Hence find the values of x for which 5(𝑥 − 2)(𝑥 + 1)(3𝑥 − 2) < 0. [2]
