Network Engineer L1/L2 Notes

Network Engineer L1/L2 Notes

Level 1 (L1): Networking Basics

1. OSI Model and TCP/IP Model

- OSI: 7 layers (Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application).

- TCP/IP: 4 layers (Network Access, Internet, Transport, Application).

2. IP Addressing (IPv4 and IPv6)

- IPv4: 32-bit, Classes A, B, C, D, E.

- IPv6: 128-bit, Address types: Unicast, Multicast, Anycast.

3. Subnetting and CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing)

- Subnet mask determines the network and host portions.

- CIDR allows flexible IP address allocation.

4. Network Devices

- Switches: Operate at Layer 2, forward frames based on MAC addresses.

- Routers: Operate at Layer 3, forward packets based on IP addresses.

- Firewalls: Secure networks by filtering traffic.

5. Common Protocols

- HTTP/HTTPS: Web communication.

- DNS: Domain name resolution.

- DHCP: Dynamic IP assignment.

- FTP/SFTP: File transfer protocols.

Level 2 (L2): Network Configuration and Troubleshooting

1. VLANs and Trunking

- VLAN: Logical segmentation of networks within a switch.

- Trunking: Carries multiple VLANs over a single link (802.1Q).

2. Routing Protocols

- RIP: Distance-vector, hop count metric.

- OSPF: Link-state, cost metric.

- EIGRP: Cisco proprietary, hybrid.

- BGP: Path-vector, used for internet routing.

3. Network Address Translation (NAT)

- Types: Static NAT, Dynamic NAT, PAT (Port Address Translation).

4. Troubleshooting Tools

- Ping: Test connectivity to a host.

- Traceroute: Determine the path packets take.

- Netstat: Show active network connections.

- Wireshark: Packet capture and analysis.

5. Log Analysis and Monitoring

- Syslog: Centralized logging.

- SNMP: Monitoring network devices.

- Tools: Nagios, SolarWinds.

Additional Skills

1. Wireless Networking

- WLAN Basics: Access points, SSID.

- 802.11 Standards: Wi-Fi protocols.

2. Security Basics

- ACLs: Permit/Deny traffic based on rules.

- VPNs: Secure communication over the internet.

- Encryption: Protect data (e.g., AES, RSA).

3. Backup and Disaster Recovery

- Backup strategies: Full, Incremental, Differential.

- Tools: TFTP, FTP, cloud solutions.

4. Basic Command-Line Configurations

- Cisco IOS: Show running-config, interface configuration.

- Juniper: show configuration, set commands.
