2. Unit Description
The system is designed to perform radioscopic and fluoroscopic examinations, using a 90/90
universal remote control table with variable height, an R&F panel connected to a digital system, and
a high voltage generator.

2.1. Main components

In its standard configuration, the system is composed of different components, here below listed:
− Remote tilting table
− User interface
− Digital system
− Generator

2.2. Remote tilting table

The table structure allows the operators to move easily toward the patient; also a cantilevered
tabletop allows operator access from all sides. The patient can easily climb on or off the table, either
horizontally or vertically. The longitudinal displacement of the X-ray tube and of the detector
assembly of 162 cm, allows a 205x43 cm patient coverage area, thus eliminating the need of
repositioning the patient.
The reduced focus / floor distance of the unit allows easy performance of weight bearing studies.
The focal distance variation is motorized, and allows positioning the X-ray tube assembly from the

3.3. Beam Alignment

Before the shipment, the equipment is subject to tests and detailed inspections in the factory. In
addition, the mechanical parts adjustment is made during the inspection, but because of the
impossibility to reproduce the same installation conditions (different ways of mounting of rails and
bridge), little adjustments might be necessary.

All the limit values here used are stricter than those required by applicable IEC standards. In case the
limits in this document are not achievable for the system considered, please refer to the IEC
standards.

Important information
Perform all the procedure both in vertical and in horizontal conditions.

WARNING
The screws labelled with ETS symbol (Essential To Safety) are involved in safety
during installation, parts replacement or regulations.

3.3.1. Collimator light field / X-ray field adjustment

Important information
If you prefer, you can also use the GE TOOL 2109725.

This alignment rarely has to be performed during installation. However, check the alignment at the
end of installation keeping the following first points of the procedure as reference.
The light group does not have any more the possibility to move the light source, which is
mechanically centered in factory. Therefore, the following procedure describes how to align the X-ray
field with the simulation light by adjusting the position of the X-ray field. The idea is to move the
collimator on its flange until misalignment requirements are met.

• Mount the collimator approximately centered on the flange, by equally tightening the four fixing
screws. This step is important to reduce the time loss to achieve correct alignment.
Particular attention must be paid to avoid damaging extra-focal blades by crashing them against
x-ray tube output cone.
• Select an anatomical program that has the logical mode LM10 and NOT LM11 (the anatomical
program TEST is suggested).
• Position the tube at minimum FFD (SID). Set the collimator for manual operation (no virtual
collimator) and project an illuminated field of about 30x30 cm2.
• Put the radio opaque markers (similar to small coins) on the borders of the light field, as showed
in the figure below.

Page 91
Discovery RF180 GE Healthcare
Service Manual Table 5793727-1EN, Rev 5

• Check the misalignment by looking at the markers in the image acquired. If the alignment is
correct, the markers will be placed close to the four corners of the acquired image.

Example: the alignment between collimator Example: the alignment between collimator
light field and X-ray field is NOT CORRECT light field and X-ray field is CORRECT

F1 → |a| + |b| < 2% SID

F2 → |c| + |d| < 2% SID

Perform the measurements (in pixel) using the ruler calibrator tool .
In order to make the comparison with the SID, convert the measured pixels to millimeters, using the
conversion factor:
o Thales 4343FL → 0.148 mm/pixel
o Thales 4343RF → 0.148 mm/pixel

Important information
The conversion factor depends on the detector type. Check the specific factor if
managing with detectors other than the listed ones.

distance [mm] = distance [pixel] * conversion_factor [mm/pixel]

• If necessary, adjust the position of the collimator as described in the Installation Manual (P/N
5793725-1EN).

Page 92
GE Healthcare Discovery RF180
5793727-1EN, Rev 5 Service Manual Table

3.3.2. X-ray field perpendicularity check

Important information
You can either use the GE TOOL 2109724 or go to section 3.3.2.2.

If possible, it is advisable to perform this check with the cylinder method because it is more reliable
and precise. If the technician does not have the cylinder, follow the procedure without the cylinder
as option.
This procedure must be carried out after performing the adjustment between collimator light and X-
ray field.
The perpendicularity (maximum 3°) is requested in order to correctly perform the adjustment
between X-ray field and detector. Anyway, it is strongly suggested to reduce this inclination as much
as possible.

3.3.2.1. Procedure with the cylinder

The procedure must be performed in NO-TILTING condition.
• Place the cylinder so that its center is centered with respect to the collimator light. This
procedure assumes that the collimator light field is aligned with the X-ray field.
• Select an anatomical program that has the logical mode LM10 and NOT LM11 (the anatomical
program TEST is suggested).
• Set the system so that the X-ray beam is supposed to be perpendicular to the detector. Take an
exposure.
• In the resulting image, evaluate the distance between the two metal pieces positioned in the
two-cylinder bases.

Perform the measurements (in pixel) using the ruler calibrator tool .
If the X-ray field is perfectly perpendicular to the detector, the two metal pieces are overlapped
in the image. If not, two separate points corresponding to the metal pieces are clearly visible.

Example: the beam is NOT PERFECTLY Example: the X-ray beam is ALMOST
perpendicular to the detector. PERFECTLY perpendicular to the detector.

• Convert the measured pixels to millimeters, using the conversion factor:

o Thales 4343FL → 0.148 mm/pixel
o Thales 4343RF → 0.148 mm/pixel
Page 93
Discovery RF180 GE Healthcare
Service Manual Table 5793727-1EN, Rev 5

Important information
The conversion factor depends on the detector type. Check the specific factor if
managing with detectors other than the listed ones.

distance [mm] = distance [pixel] * conversion_factor [mm/pixel]

• In case the distance between the two points exceeds the limit value, mechanical adjustment of X-
ray tube position on the fixation group has to be performed (please refer to Installation Manual
P/N 5793725-1EN).
The limit value is calculated with the equation below, keeping 3° as the maximum acceptable
inclination from the perfect orthogonality. The measurement of the cylinder height is required
for this check.
𝐿𝑖𝑚𝑖𝑡 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 [𝑚𝑚] = 𝑡𝑎𝑛 (3°) ∗ 𝑐𝑦𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟_ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 [𝑚𝑚]

If the cylinder height is 200 mm, the limit value is 10,5 mm.

3.3.2.2. Procedure without the cylinder

The procedure must be performed in NO-TILTING condition.
• Position the tube at 115 cm as focal distance.
• Select an anatomical program that has the logical mode LM10 and NOT LM11 (the anatomical
program TEST is suggested).
• Set the collimator for manual operation (no virtual collimator) and project an illuminated field of
20x20 cm2 (or another value smaller than the detector area).
• Set convenient exposure data and acquire the image.
• Draw the diagonal lines relative to the acquired image field to identify its center. With the ruler

calibrator tool , measure the distance (in pixel) of the center from the left border and from
the lower border.

[𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑥1 𝑥2 𝑦1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦2 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑝𝑖𝑥𝑒𝑙]

• Convert the measured pixels to millimeters, using the conversion factor:

o Thales 4343FL → 0.148 mm/pixel
o Thales 4343RF → 0.148 mm/pixel

Important information
The conversion factor depends on the detector type. Check the specific factor if
managing with detectors other than the listed ones.

distance [mm] = distance [pixel] * conversion_factor [mm/pixel]

• The limit value of this distance is 3,41 cm, obtained with this formula:

𝐿𝑖𝑚𝑖𝑡 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 [𝑐𝑚] = 𝑡𝑎𝑛 (3°) ∗ (180 − 115)[𝑐𝑚]

3.3.3. Alignment of the X-ray beam with the detector center

In this section, it is described the procedure to check the alignment between the x-ray field and the
image receptor center. This procedure assumes that the collimation is correct.
In case the misalignment exceeds the limits, a calibration of the synchronization between tube and
image receptor, both in the patient support table and in the wall stand.

Refer to the Digital Service Manual, Chapter 8.4 “General Configuration” to remove the Auto
recognize shutter for these tests. Please, after this alignment, put the settings back as they were
originally.

• Position the table at 0°

• Position the tube at minimum FFD (SID).
• Set the collimator for manual operation (no virtual collimator) and project an illuminated field of
20x20 cm2.
• Select an anatomical program that has the logical mode LM10 and NOT LM11 (the anatomical
program TEST is suggested).
• Set convenient exposure data and acquire the image.
• Draw four diagonal lines relative to the receptor field and the acquired image field. With the ruler

calibrator tool , measure the distance in pixel between the two intersections of the four
diagonal lines (i.e. the centers of the two rectangles).

Page 96

• Convert the measured pixels to millimeters, using the conversion factor:

o Thales 4343FL → 0.148 mm/pixel
o Thales 4343RF → 0.148 mm/pixel

Important information
The conversion factor depends on the detector type. Check the specific factor if
managing with detectors other than the listed ones.

distance [mm] = distance [pixel] * conversion_factor [mm/pixel]

• If the distance expressed in millimeters exceeds 1.4% of the SID, adjust the X-ray tube position on
the fixation group, as described in the specific paragraph (please refer to Installation Manual P/N
5793725-1EN).

3.3.4. Correspondence between X-ray field and effective image reception area
Important information
Prefer this procedure rather than the previous one, if wanting to check if the
collimation is correct. The good outcome of this test verifies also that the X-ray
beam is centered with respect to the detector’s center.

• Select an anatomical program that has the logical mode LM10 and NOT LM11 (the anatomical
program TEST is suggested).
• Set the collimation to 20x20 cm2. Take an exposure.

• Remove the virtual collimator. Using the ruler calibrator tool , on the image select a square
200 mm x 200 mm centered with respect to the detector. If needed, find the detector’s center
with the diagonal lines.

It is recommended to measure the square in pixels, instead of millimeters, because the ruler may
not have been calibrated. For this purpose, use the conversion factor (below) and use the ruler
calibrator to have the distances expressed in pixels.

• Measure (pixel) the four distances from the square to the irradiated area and convert them in
millimeters using the same conversion factor.
Conversion factor:
o Thales 4343FL → 0.148 mm/pixel
o Thales 4343RF → 0.148 mm/pixel

Important information
The conversion factor depends on the detector type. Check the specific factor if
managing with detectors other than the listed ones.

distance [pixel] = distance [mm] / conversion_factor [mm/pixel]

Page 98

• Check that the following conditions are verified:

o C1 + C2 < 0.03 * SID
o D1 + D2 < 0.03 * SID
o C1 + C2 + D1 + D2 < 0.04 * SID
• If needed, adjust the X-ray tube position on the fixation group, as described in the specific
paragraph (please refer to Installation Manual P/N 5793725-1EN).

3.3.5. Collimator position adjustment

WARNING
Take care not to introduce a rotation of the collimator. Collimator blades must be
parallel to the detector edges.

This adjustment performs the centering between the X-ray field and collimator light. This operation
does not act on the correspondence with the detector.
The collimator position has to be adjusted on the flange by acting on the four screws in the following
figure. In particular, to move the collimator in one direction, loosen the screws on the opposite
direction and tighten the screws of that direction.
At the end of the adjustment, tighten the screw (1 Nm for each screw) in order to fix the collimator
position reached and add Loctite Type 222.

Important information
As a general rule, when X-ray field is shifted in direction “D” with respect to the light
field, the collimator has to be moved in the direction opposite to “D”
(alias “-D”) to correct the alignment.

WARNING
At the end of the alignment operations, ensure that all screws are properly tightened
(torque value above).

3.3.6. X-ray tube housing position adjustment

The adjustments in this subchapter are required when it is necessary to center the X-ray field and the
collimator light on the detector. They do not perform any correction between the X-ray field and the
collimator light.

Page 99
Discovery RF180 GE Healthcare
Service Manual Table 5793727-1EN, Rev 5

3.3.6.1. Longitudinal adjustment

If the displacement to correct is very small, it may be enough to perform the adjustment of the
following four screws. In normal condition the screws are placed centered in the holes.
Unscrew the four nuts and move the X-ray tube housing until the right position is reached. Screw the
same nuts to fix the new position (25 Nm).

WARNING
At the end of the alignment operations, ensure that all nuts are properly tightened (torque
value above).

If the displacement to correct can not be adjusted as above, follow the procedure below.
Screw two screws and unscrew the other two screws (symmetrically!), all highlighted with red arrows
(Allen key CH.ES 4) in order to make the bracket rotate in the desired direction. An example is
reported below.

Bracket
For example, if the bracket (so the X-ray tube) is wanted to be turned anti-clockwise (like the arrow
on the left), screw partially the screws 1 and 4 and unscrew partially the screws 3 and 2, in order to
have the desired rotation.

Then, release the tube-housing brake and turn the X-Ray tube housing until the sphere in the pictures
is positioned in the opening as illustrated.

Check that the adjustment has produced the desired correction.

At the end of the adjustment, apply a torque value of 25 Nm to all the screws, in order to fix the
rotation obtained.
WARNING
At the end of the alignment operations, ensure that all screws are properly tightened
(torque value above).

Service Manual Table 5793727-1EN, Rev 5

3.3.6.2. Transversal adjustment

In order to correct a displacement in the transversal direction, follow the procedure here explained.

Insert the allen key CH.ES 5 through the

holes highlighted until the two screws
are reached.

Unscrew the screws until the X-ray tube

housing can be manually rotated in the
transversal direction.

Rotate the Xray tube housing as desired.

Screw the two screws in order to fix the

rotation performed (10 Nm).

Check that the adjustment has

produced the desired correction.

WARNING
At the end of the alignment operations, ensure that all screws are properly tightened
(torque value above).

6. Preventive Maintenance
WARNING
The expected lifetime of the unit is 10 years if maintenance is properly carried out
by following the instructions contained in the unit service documentation.

The unit, as any other technical apparatus, must be carefully used and needs periodical maintenance
as specified in the technical documentation.
The manufacturer is responsible for its products safety only in case their maintenance, repairing or
modification are carried out by the manufacturer itself, or by personnel authorized by the
manufacturer.

WARNING
The manufacturer denies any responsibility for improper operation, damages or
dangerous situations caused directly or indirectly by non-respect of maintenance
schedule.

o User maintenance
The operator must daily check the following items:

• checking that all the accessories are firmly fixed to their supports;
• checking that all the movement stop buttons, if pressed, properly switch off the power circuit of
the table.

6.1.1. Cleaning and disinfection

The unit must be always cleaned after use. All appropriate policies and procedures should be
followed for cleaning and disinfecting in order to prevent contamination of the staff, patients and
unit itself, according to the local regulation. The user is responsible for selecting a disinfection
procedure.

6.1.1.1. Cleaning
In order to clean the exterior of the unit:
• Turn off the system and disconnect the power supply.

WARNING
Switch off the equipment and apply the LOTO procedure (GE PN 5789495-1EN).

WARNING
When the unit is going to be cleaned, be sure to turn off the main power of the
system. Never use anhydrous or high solvency alcohols, benzene, thinner or any
other flammable cleaning agent. Otherwise, it may result in fire or electric shock.

Page 189
Discovery RF180 GE Healthcare
Service Manual Table 5793727-1EN, Rev 5

• Clean the unit by means of a soft cloth moistened with water and a neutral detergent.

WARNING
Make sure no liquid gets into the device.

WARNING
Clean the unit with only a little moisture. Do not spray disinfectants or detergents
directly on the unit. Do not pour liquid directly on the unit.

WARNING
Do not use solvents such as anhydrous or high solvency alcohols, ether, thinner or
benzene. Do not use any corrosive, dissolving or abrasive cleaning or polishing
detergents.
Otherwise, the unit’s surface might be damaged. Using unsuitable cleaning agents
or methods can damage the property when surface becomes dull and brittle (e.g. by
using alcohol-containing agents).

WARNING
Do not open the unit for cleaning. No components inside the device require cleaning
by the user.

WARNING
Let the unit surfaces get dry before switching the X-ray system back on.

Page 190
GE Healthcare Discovery RF180
5793727-1EN, Rev 5 Service Manual Table

6.1.1.2. Disinfecting
WARNING
Using a disinfectant that can form explosive or flammable gas mixtures is hazard to
life and health because of explosion risk. Switch the unit off before disinfecting. Let
the gas mixture evaporate before switching the X-ray system back on.

WARNING
Switch off the equpiment and apply the LOTO procedure (GE PN 5789495-1EN).

In order to disinfect the unit, use only disinfectant and procedures approved by the manufacturer
and that correspond to the national regulations and guidelines, as well as to explosion protection. If
you plan to use other disinfectants, approval by the manufacturer is needed before use, as most
disinfectants can damage the unit.
It is recommended to use a liquid solution with aldehyde or amphoteric based water solution for
disinfecting surfaces such as Tego 103, Korsolin (not available in Canada. For Canadian market, it is
recommended to use tb Minuteman or hx2). Disinfectants containing phenolic substances or chlorine
are partially abrasive and not recommended. These limitations are to be taken into account for
agents with alcohol used in non-diluted form (e.g. for disinfecting hands).
Disinfectant sprays must not be used: the spray could penetrate within the unit itself. Consequently,
unit safety cannot be guaranteed (possible damage to electronic components, formation of
inflammable mixtures of air and solvent vapors).

WARNING
It is generally known that disinfectants can be hazardous to health. Concentrations
of disinfectants in air that is breathed must not exceed specific legal limits. For this
reason, it is important to follow instructions supplied by the disinfectant’s
manufacturer regarding their usage.

Page 191
Discovery RF180 GE Healthcare
Service Manual Table 5793727-1EN, Rev 5

6.2. Service team maintenance

In order to ensure the maximum safety level for the patient and the operator, it is necessary that the
manufacturer authorized service team check the unit periodically.

Mechanical parts such as chains, wires, ball bearings, etc. need regular inspections.
It is recommended to check frequently the conditions of the wires and in any way not to exceed one
year between checks.
It is recommended to check periodically the proper operation of the grounding system of the
examination room in which the unit has been installed, according with the regulations in force.

Checks should be made at shorter time intervals in case the unit is intensively used. Special
modifications or maintenance must be made exclusively by the manufacturer or by expressly
authorized personnel.

6.16. Precautions for linear metal guides

In order to avoid the formation of rust on the guides, due to contact with bare hands or other body
parts, the following precaution, care, and good working practices must be implemented during the
assembly and fixing, cleaning and disassembling of the mechanical guides.

Use gloves to perform all the steps when assembling and fixing the metal guides.
After assembling them on the equipment, use gloves and a disposable cloth to apply the specific
dewatering and corrosion-preventing oil (CONTRAKOR FLUID H1 SPRAY - KLUBER - GMM P/N 161254)
on the guides.

EQUIPMENT CLEANING PHASE:

In the various equipment cleaning steps, use specific products that, in case of accidental contact with
the guide, do not damage it.
The following are the suitable/allowed products:
- Solmentar C4 degreaser (GMM P/N 33765)
- Certisuds degreaser (GMM P/N 33912)

Once the cleaning phase is completed, lubricate the guide with protective oil (CONTRAKOR FLUID H1
SPRAY - KLUBER - GMM P/N 161254).

SURFACE RUST REMOVAL:

If there is rust on the guides, the operator must perform the following operations in order to remove
it.
Wear nitrile gloves and use a layer of 1000-grit wettable sand paper.
Rub the sand paper repeatedly over the rusty part of the linear guide, until the rust is eliminated.

To reach the rust located in a concave area of the guide, use a piece of 1.5 mm2- section electrical
wire, and wrap it with wettable,1000-grit sand paper.

Once the sanding phase is completed, lubricate the guide with protective oil (CONTRAKOR FLUID H1
SPRAY - KLUBER - GMM P/N 161254).

7.2. Potentiometers replacement & adjustment

7.2.1. Introduction
The software calibration procedure described in section 3 of this manual is valid if the analogue
sensing circuits of the multi-turns potentiometers used as position detectors of the remote tilting
table movements have been properly adjusted.
In order to get the optimum dynamic range from the potentiometer signals, it is necessary that the
potentiometer itself be mechanically coupled to the movement and that the end of travel micro-
switches be properly adjusted as described in the present section of the manual.

The following instructions are related to the replacement of all the potentiometers:
• Position the potentiometer (not coupled to the mechanical) at half of its stroke.
• Move the mechanical up to reaching the “minimum” end of stroke position being sure that the
microswitch is activated.
• Position the potentiometer at a quarter turn.
