Adverbs of frequency are used:


▪ before the main verb BUT after the verb “to be”
▪ between the auxiliary verb and main verb in negative sentences
▪ after the subject in interrogative sentences

William Shakespeare (be) born in Stratford-on-Avon on April 23, 1564. He (go)


to the local Stratford Grammar School, where he (be) (teach) by Master Walter
Roche. Lessons began at six o'clock in the morning in the summer in order to make the
most of daylight.

PAST SIMPLE PAST CONTINUOUS
Form: we add “ed” to all regular verbs, Form: was/were + verb + ing
Irregular verbs must be learnt by heart. The Past Continuous means that at a time in the past
we were in the middle of an action.
We use the Past Simple for something in the past
which is finished. • We were playing tennis at 4 p.m. yesterday.
• They were eating when we arrived.
• He played tennis yesterday.
• The children went to the park this morning. We use: wasn’t/weren’t + verb + ing for negatives:
