The gender stereotyping of “math is not for a girl” is evident at societal and school levels, and I firmly

believe that I was born to break this stereotype as I had an inherent inclination towards maths since
childhood. I am Nighat Nasir, resident of a small hamlet namely Buchroo of South Kashmir’s Kulgam
district. I completed my elementary education from Govt Boys Middle school Buchroo Kulgam.
Thereafter, I did my secondary education from Kashmir Public School Balsoo Yaripora Kulgam where I
passed my class 10th in 2015 with 88.20% marks and I was the topper of the school. Due to affinity for
maths, I opted for “Compound Arts” stream, and got enrolled at Govt girl’s higher secondary school
Yaripora, where I completed my 12th in 2017 with 90.2% and I topped the school in Arts stream. In year
2018, I joined Govt women’s degree college Anantnag with Economics and Mathematics as two core
subjects under CBCS scheme. I completed my graduation in 2021 with 80.40% marks. In 2022, I
appeared for Kashmir University Entrance test in Economics and cleared the exam with 4 th rank.
Currently, I am pursuing post-graduation in Economics from University of Kashmir. Throughout my
academic journey, I have consistently demonstrated my commitment to excellence. I have maintained a
satisfactory CGPA, engaged in various extracurricular activities, and volunteered extensively within my
community. These experiences have not only broadened my horizons but have also reinforced my belief
in the importance of giving back.

Year, 2016 was a momentous year for me, due to various reasons. That year marks the beginning of my
journey of social service. Throughout the valley, the blockade of 2016, shut the schools, students were
sitting idle at homes, with no focus towards their studies. Meanwhile, I made an endeavor, and started
free coaching in the premises of my home. Support from local teachers and youth made it a success.
Additionally, when Art 370, was abrogated on Aug 5, 2019, I again stated a free coaching academy in
association with my colleagues and teachers of adjoining areas. We got great appreciation from parents
and that news got published in a newspaper as well. Board exams were ahead, that step was need of
the hour. Our students performed phenomenally well in the exams.

I aspire to become a policy-maker so as to address certain critical global issues ranging from poverty to
inequality and poor quality of education at various levels in the developing world. I firmly believe that
the conventional policies aimed at resolving these issues are flawed in their approach. One size fits all
approach would not work to resolve socioeconomic issues facing the third world. My approach would be
to tailor policies that would be in sync with the local circumstances of the concerned area. Our state is
also facing certain issues ranging from poverty to poor education outcomes. I firmly believe that a well-
established and comprehensively planned Baitulmaal system would work in reducing socio-economic
inequalities in the state. Regarding poor education outcomes, I think apart from rejuvenating the
education system, participation of youth is critical. I wish to conduct a research that would reflect how
participation of stake holders in policymaking would lead to better outcomes in public education system.
However, for a student like me, economic constraints prove out to be an Achilles heel. KEI scholarship
would offer me an opportunity to partially alleviate such constraints. It would offer me a chance to
interact with my fellow scholars in productive discussions and take certain lessons from their
experience. The scholarship would help me in ensuring purchase of certain highly recommended books
to understand the global economy in an effective way.

My selection as a KEI scholar would encourage to me look beyond the constraints and repose confidence
in myself. Receiving the KEI Scholarship would greatly alleviate the financial strain on my family and
allow me to focus more on my studies and community involvement. It would enable me to fully immerse
myself in my coursework, engage in research opportunities, and participate in extracurricular activities
that will help me grow academically and personally. I am writing to express my sincere and enthusiastic
interest in applying for the KEI Scholarship for the academic year 2023. As an aspiring KEI scholar, I am
dedicated to pursuing excellence in my education and am committed to making a positive impact on my
community and the world. I believe that this scholarship will provide me with the invaluable opportunity
to further my academic and personal growth, and I would be deeply honored to be considered as a
recipient. I am deeply grateful for your consideration of my application for the KEI Scholarship. It would
be an honor to be selected as a recipient, and I assure you that I will make the most of this opportunity. I
look forward to the possibility of becoming part of the KEI family and contributing to its mission.

My hobbies include drawing, calligraphy, writing columns for newspapers relating to economics. Apart
from it, I love to teach mathematics.
