Ma 115 Final Exam Dec 17, 2010

2x + 3
1. [6 pts] For the rational function, f (x) = ,
x+1
• identify the domain of f ,
• determine all roots of f ,
• identify and describe all vertical and horizontal asymptotes of y = f (x).

2. [6 pts] Evaluate the following integrals:

Z 2 Z 0
ds
3x2 − 4x + 7 dx

(a) (b)
−1 −1 s−1

3. [8 pts] Sketch the following curves in the xy plane on the interval specified. The
curves must correctly identify the x and y intercepts (the points where the curve
crosses the x and y axis, respectively). Please note that this exercise is not requiring
you to apply more advanced curve sketching techniques as discussed in Chapter 4.

(a) y = 4x − x3 −3≤x≤3

(b) y = 1 − cos(2x) 0 ≤ x ≤ 2π

(c) y = ln(x + 1) −1<x≤2

4. [6 pts] For the following piecewise function, determine the values of a and b such
that F is differentiable on the interval −2 < x < 3.
(
4 − x2 −2 ≤ x < 1
F (x) =
ax + b 1≤x≤3

5. [8 pts] Evaluate the following limits and justify your answers. For unbounded
limits, please indicate +∞ or −∞, as appropriate.

x2 + x − 6 (4π/3)(r + h)3 − (4π/3)r3

(a) lim e−x cos x (b) lim− (c) lim
x→+∞ x→2 x2 − 4 h→0 h

√ tangent line to the curve y = 1/ 1 − x at x = 0 and use this to
6. [6 pts] Find the
approximate 1/ 0.9.

7. [6 pts] Differentiate each of the following functions:

x+1
(a) y = x3 − 3(x2 + π) (b) y = (x2 + 1) e−2x (c) y =
x2 − 2x + 2

8. [6 pts] Determine the values of the constant r such that y = xr is a solution to the
equation,
d2 y dy
x2 2 + x − y = 0.
dx dx

9. [8 pts] Evaluate the following integrals using the method of substitution:

Z √ Z
ln x
(a) dx (b) sin(2x) cos2 (2x) dx
x

10. [6 pts] Set up (but do not evaluate) a definite integral that calculates the area of
the region between the curves y = cos x and y = sin x and between x = 0 and x = π.
A complete solution must include a sketch of the region that is consistent with the
definite integral.

11. [8 pts] Evaluate the following using integration by parts (k is a positive constant).
Z Z
−kx
(a) xe dx (b) ln x dx

12. [6 pts] Use the definition of the derivative as a limit to calculate f 0 (x) when
f (x) = x/(1 − x). (No credit for applying formulas derived in Chapter 3.)

13. [8 pts] Differentiate each of the following functions (k and b are positive constants).
2
(a) y = x2 sin2 (3x) (b) w = t e−kt sin(bt) (c) y = arctan(x/2)
14. [8 pts] A model rocket is launched from ground level at t = 0. The rocket travels
upward in a straight line for 4 sec until the fuel burns out. The rocket continues
traveling along this vertical line under the acceleration of gravity (32 ft/sec2 ),
returning to ground level at time Tf (the graph of v(t) is included). If the velocity of
the rocket in ft/sec is modeled with the following function,
(
6 t2 0 ≤ t < 4 sec
v(t) =
−32(t − 7) 4 ≤ t ≤ Tf

determine (a) the maximum height reached by the rocket and (b) the final time Tf .

15. [8 pts] Sand falls from a conveyor belt at the rate of 10 m3 /sec onto the top of a
conical pile. The height of the pile is always three-eighths of the base diameter. How
fast is the height changing when the pile is 4 m high.

16. [8 pts] We would like to construct an open rectangular box with square base and
fixed volume V . The materials cost $6/ft2 for the bottom and $4/ft2 for the sides.
Determine the dimensions that will minimize the cost.

17. [8 pts] Circle City is perfectly circular with a radius of five miles. The population
density P depends only on the distance r from the center of the city. With r specified
in miles, the density in units of population per square mile is described by the
function P = f (r). Use this information to write down a definite integral that
calculates the total population of Circle City. Justify your answer.
Hint: First estimate the population in a narrow annular region from r = ri to
r = ri + ∆r (the shaded region in the figure).
