Boy Overboard Listening Comprehension Activities Chapters 1-3: After Write a letter to your grandmother, in a far away village

(5 marks: 3 information withheld, 2 personal story) Chapters 13-15: During While listening to chapters 13-15, track the journey that Bibi and Jamal make, writing down the different locations theyre in and how they get to each new location. (5 marks) Chapters 16-18: During - Boy Overboard is written from the point-of-view of Jamal, who is crazy about soccer. While listening, write down a list of all of the words and phrases that have a reference to soccer. (5 marks) Chapters 19-21: After Imagine that you are boarding the same boat that Jamal, Bibi and their parents are boarding. Using sensory words, describe what you might possibly smell, see, hear, taste and touch when walking around on the boat. (5 marks 1 per sense) Chapters 22-24: During Sketch images that you gain while listening to the text. (5 marks) Chapters 25-27: After Write down some of the things that make Jamal and Bibis situation seem hopeless. What things do Jamal and Bibi look to in the future to raise their spirits and help them to stay positive, despite their circumstances? What gives them hope? (5 marks) Chapters 28-30: After Write down one paragraph explaining the main events that occur in this passage. (5 marks) Chapters 31-33: After Make a prediction as to what you think will happen next in the story. (5 marks) Chapters 34-36: During/After Collate the references that Jamal makes to the qualities and characteristics of Australians. Jamal thinks all Australians are this way and thereby forms a stereotype. Do you think these generalisations are true? Explain. (5 marks)

Chapters 37-39: After In these chapters, Omar tells Jamal the truth about his family background. Compare what Jamal believed about Omars family with what Omar revealed about his family. Why do you think Omar kept this a secret from everyone? (5 marks) Chapters 40-42: After Australia is not living up to its hallowed principle of giving people a fair go. There is nothing fair about playing on public fears to build up a negative image of refugees, nor in locking up hundreds of children, women and men without charge or review by a court. Explain what Irene Khan is saying about the governments treatment of asylum seekers. Do you agree or disagree? Explain why. (5 marks)
