Youth = mladosť
adolescent

Youth is the time of life between childhood and adulthood (maturity) = dospelosť, zrelosť
It is said that youth is the best time in one´s life
Everyone is as young as he/she feels (your real age dont´t have to correspod to how you feel)
immature = nevyspelý, nedospelý (ale aj nezrelý správaním) /mature = zrelý, dospelý
Teenagers versus Young people
Adolescence describes the teenage years between 13 and 19. It is the time of life between childhood and adulthood
(maturity).
Adolescent (teenager) = a young person between 13-19 =dospievajúci
Young People (yound adults) = a group of people between 20-30
There are differences between these groups of young people, but they have something in common, like the same opinions,
to have fun and ambitions to change the world
 Young people are usually well-educated, experienced and self-confident, they have acess to all the modern
inventions, such as mobile phone or computer.
 Generally speaking, young people are optimistic, free and strong because they don´t take life too seriously.
 Their lifestyle depends on their parents, but mostly on their friends.
 Friendship and love usually become the most important values. Young people go to the cinema or to disco or just
hang around. Some of them like watching TV, listening to the music, playing computer games, playing musical
imstrument, doing some sport or reading books.
 Image is for young people really important. It can express their opinions and attitudes to society. Young people like
to experiment with their image. Their image can be influenced by music they listen to.
 Some of them follow fashion trends because they want to be „in“, the others wear strange clothes. Many young
people prefer brand name clothes. Strange hair styles are also typical for young people. They dye their hair and
use a lot of cosmetics like for example make-up.
 Tattoos and piercing are very popular among young people.
Teenagers
 undergo (=prejsť, prekonať, podstúpiť) physical changes
 moody
 personality is formed
 tetchy =poráždený, popudlivý, nevrlý / touchy = urážlivý, precitlivený
 easily influenced
 absent minded = negácia, minded = majúci v úmysle, má chuť, chce...
 try to do experiments
 lazy
 face alcohol, drugs, cigarette addictions
 impulsive = prchký
sociable= spoločenský, priateľský
Young people

 Responsible for their deeds = skutky
 Inexperienced (at work)

 critical to their parents and other adults
 rebel against everything
 on the one hand – sometimes moody, stubborn, cynical, cheek, on the other hand – sensitive, enthusiastic, full of
energy if they are concerned with sth.(=ak sa niečim zaoberajú, ak sa o niečo starajú)
 they are not mature yet, it´s the period of big changes – mental and physical
 try to find their place in society
 they are trying something new and challenging
 search for their idols and role models and try to imitate them
How do young people spend their spare time (free time)? Talk about interests, hobbies.
Problems that young people face
 In families (a generation gap = medzigeneračné rozdiely) – they have conflicts with their parents/ an older
generation, have different opinions on life, duties, rights etc.
 At school - conflicts with their teachers if they behave rudely, they are lazy, disobedient = neposlušný, they dont´t
learn enough
 conflicts with their schoolmates – can be
 bullied / or bully others = šikanovať, zastrašovať
 Face dangers of different addictions because they are easily ifluenced by their peers – don´t want to differ from
others
 Die of a drug overdose = zomrieť na predávkovanie
 They can be influenced by mass media in how they should look – good look is the most important for them, they
want to be slim, they suffer from anorexia or bulimia which can endanger their lives
 At present – obesity has become a great problem of the young, they eat too much junk food and miss any
movement – the generation of coach potatoes
What do teenagers say about parents?
 don´t give us enough freedom, interfere too much = zasahovať, miešať sa
 are always criticising young people, don´t understand us
 are too strict
 say that we are lazy, easy-going, unwilling to work
 underestimate us = podceniť
 don´t give us enough pocket money
 would be satisfied if we spend all our leisure time on studying or helping them
What do parents say about teenagers?
 don´t respect the older generation
 think they don´t need any advice
 they are rude, impolite, badly behaved, use bad words
 don´t want to help at home, are interested only in music, fashion, their friends
 don´t study a lot, don´t think about their future
 spend too much time with their friends
 their music is deafening = too loud (ohlušujúci), their clothes and hairstyle awful
 Compare the generation of your parents/ grandparents with yours (lifestyle, opportunities, attention of
parents, starting families, employment)
Talk about your future
 Your expectations
 Your visions
 Your desires
 Your worries
Is there anything you are looking forward to?
Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
