He will be using various marketing techniques to portray and advertise his business to
potential clients. He will promote his services via local advertising methods such as
networking, attending industry related events and fairs, sending emails to local
construction companies detailing the services he has on offer, handing out leaflets &
business cards, making good use of social media and most importantly through
gratified clients who will promote his business by word of mouth. Promotion by word
of mouth is the most effective and inexpensive way to endorse any business. He will
also create a website for his business in order to have a prestigious presence on the
internet. His advertisement methods will be explained in more depth within the
Promotion & Advertisement section of this business plan.

8. Target Market

Mr Alev proposes to start up his business in and around Bromley, London where there
is a great demand for this type of business. He will be offering his services to
individual developers, architects and businesses such as housing developers,
construction firms etc. in the area of Bromley, London. He will also be willing to offer
his services as a sub-contractor to larger construction firms.

Mr Alev would also be able to search for sub-contracting opportunities on the relevant
websites for the engineers:

https://tas-arupjobs.taleo.net/careersection/ex/jobsearch.ftl?lang=en#

https://www.linkedin.com

https://jobs.theengineer.co.uk/

https://www.engineeringjobs.co.uk/

9. Fees

Mr Onder Alev will be charging his customers at an hourly rate or if required on a project
basis. He will provide an estimate of how many hours he will require to complete

Page | 9
a project and will inform the client. Once they agree on the price and sign an
agreement he will go ahead with his services.

Due to the fact that it is quite a competitive market, he aims to be charging his
customers at reasonable and competitive prices. He will start by carrying out a survey
at the site first in order to determine the nature of the work to be done and to
understand the customer’s needs and timescale. He will need satisfactory information
regarding the job that needs to be completed which requires him to arrange a meeting
with his clients where they will also discuss the fees for the work or the project.

His fees will start from £40.00 per hour for his consultancy services and may increase
depending on the nature of the work to be undertaken. It will be difficult to determine
his project fees at this stage and for this reason his projected accounts will be
calculated considering that he will be charging at £40.00 per hour.

10. Competitors in the area

Mr Alev will be aiming to target individual developers, architects and businesses such
as housing developers, construction firms etc. in the area of Bromley, London. He will
also be targeting larger construction companies as they usually subcontract most of
their projects. Mr Alev has an advantage as these types of companies will be looking
for highly experienced and knowledgeable electrical engineers. Mr Alev is extremely
talented and well-educated within this sector.

He has conducted the relevant market research in this field. According to the research
conducted on yell.com, Mr Alev is not expecting to have many competitors. However,
he is also aware that not all businesses advertise their services on www.yell.com.

Mr Alev will make sure that his clients are satisfied with the service they receive from
his business. He will ensure that his services are at a higher standard than his
competitors with the use of his educational background, experiences and his talent.

Page | 10
11. Transport & Reaching Customers

Mr Alev will be using public transport, his own car and rental cars/vans to meet and
reach his clients. Due to the nature of his business, he will be spending a lot of his
time at the sites. He already has a Turkish and English driving licences.

As Mr Alev is currently residing within zone 5, he will purchase a weekly travelcard

when required. The cost of this would be around £60 for a week for zones 1-6. This
may be change depending on the location of his client. For the purpose of this
business plan, we will use the fee of £60 towards the start-up costs of her proposed
business. Additionally, there will be £100 weekly cost for fuels of his car and monthly
£100 for maintenance of the car.

12. Personnel Plan

At the initial stages of the business, Mr Alev is not planning to recruit any staff
members for running his business. He will be completing the projects by himself. In
the future, he intends to recruit a reliable team of assistants who can assist him with
the projects he takes on. Having a stable, competent and reliable team would give Mr
Alev’s business an edge over his other competitors and would give his business the
flexibility to move from one project to another with ease and efficiency.

Page | 11
13. Customer Service

The aim of ‘RAL Engineering and Consultancy’ will be to deliver an exceptional high-
quality service to his customers and to make sure that they are fulfilled and satisfied with
the outcome of his works. This will play a major role for the promotion of Mr Alev’s
business and help him to increase the volume of sales and future projects. For this reason,
he will always focus on the quality of the service which he provides. Mr Alev will
oversee any complaints or complications which may arise during the lifecycle or
completion of the projects. He will make sure that he approaches every customer in a
careful, professional and detailed manner in order to provide the same high quality and
exceptional service to all of his clients. Mr Alev will be first point of contact for his
customers to reach him with any specific instructions or complaints.

14. Promotion & Advertisements

Mr Alev will target some large construction companies as a subcontractor and also
take on smaller private projects. Mr Alev will aim to promote his business and
services in a fairly cost-effective way such as printing and distributing business cards
and leaflets. Below, you may find a number of techniques he will be using to advertise
his business.

Word of Mouth

Word-of-mouth advertising is important for every business, as each happy customer

can steer dozens of new ones. It’s one of the most credible forms of advertising
because a person puts their reputation on the line every time, they make a
recommendation and that person has nothing to gain but the appreciation of those who
are listening. For this reason, Mr Alev will aim to provide exceptional service to his
customers in order to receive recommendation through them.

Business Cards & Leaflets

Canvassing the neighbourhood to businesses, placing flyers in mailboxes or hanging ads

on doorknobs, will be a good way to target a specific area and to make sure his potential
customers have seen his information. Especially within the initial stages of the business,
Mr Alev will be advertising his business through distribution of leaflets and business
cards in the areas he is aiming to offer his electrical engineering services.

Page | 12
Business cards and leaflets will be dropped specifically to the businesses who are
trading within the area he will be targeting, such as construction firms.

Newspapers

A traditional form of advertising, daily and weekly newspaper ads will allow Mr Alev
to target specific geographic neighbourhoods. Mr Alev will be placing advertisements
on the local Turkish newspapers to attract Turkish speaking customers who are
residing in the area of Bromley, London. He will be advertising on newspapers such
as OLAY Gazette. Please see enclosed quotes from the popular Turkish OLAY
Newspaper.

Social Media

Social media platforms are an attractive marketing tool for new businesses, because
promoting a business on this platform has little or no monetary cost. The catch is that
he will be required to invest significant time in building a presence, and making his
business become recognised within the area he is trading. He will establish accounts
of social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn and will
advertise the type of services he is providing. He will aim to obtain reviews from his
customers who have been pleased with his services. He will also set-up his own
business website which will clearly demonstrate the services he will be providing. He
has already obtained a quote from www.godaddy.com.

15. SWOT Analysis

SWOT Analysis is a process where Mr Alev has identified the internal and external
factors that will affect his business’ future performance. This process will help him to
develop a strong business strategy by making sure all of the business strengths and
weaknesses as well as the opportunity and threats it faces in the marketplace.

16. Market Research

Jobs in construction, manufacturing, tech and engineering have continued to see
strong growth in 2022, with positions in mechanical, electrical, industrial and
electrical engineering some of the most in-demand roles in the UK right now. The
average salary for someone working in the engineering industry now stands at around
£36,000, with salaries rising by £960 in 2017.1 There is currently a dire need for
engineers in the UK – Engineering UK recently reported that the country needs 1.8
million new engineers and technicians by 2025.2

The UK market for mechanical and electrical (M&E) contracting has increased by almost
25% since 2012, following a period of sustained growth from 2013 onwards, driven by a
buoyant new build market, with rising output in the office and infrastructure sectors in
particular. This growth continued in 2016, when the market saw growth of 4%, despite
continued constrained public sector capital spending. In 2017, growth is
1

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/stem-awards/energy/the-great-uk-engineering-shortage/

Page | 14
forecast to stagnate, as construction output becomes more subdued. Many factors
support a continuation of market growth, including the development of higher
specification and more complex products, changes to legislation requiring the
specification of higher value products, greater use of controls and energy efficient
products, continued strength in data centre construction as well as greater levels of
outsourcing of M&E services. A key area of growth has been installations aimed at
improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions, driven by legislative
requirements and building regulations. There has been a rapid expansion in the range
of LED lighting and increasingly sophisticated control systems for heating, lighting,
and energy management, therefore this is a growth area that many contractors have
been looking to exploit.

However, several factors are negatively impacting the market at present, such as
public sector budget constraints, uncertainty over the impact of Brexit and greater use
of off-site manufactured panels and modules. The M&E market is fragmented, with
the majority of market value accounted for by smaller operators with turnover of
under £20 million, though consolidation activity amongst suppliers continues. There
have been further strategic acquisitions in response to the growing focus on integrated
services within the sector with contractors widening the range of services offered and
examples of strategic joint ventures to secure work on very large-scale projects.

In terms of market prospects, the M&E sector is heavily dependent on the

performance of the non-residential construction industry. Non-residential construction
output is facing subdued growth into the medium term. Furthermore, new non-
residential work remains highly susceptible to changes in levels of business
confidence with the private commercial sector being particularly vulnerable to
changes in speculative development programmes. The current uncertain economic
climate and falling levels of business confidence relating to Brexit and other issues is
likely to halt growth within the M&E contracting sector within the short term,
although there are positive influences on market value that will underpin growth to
some extent, including a relatively stable RMI sector and increasing prices of
imported products. Output within the office and education sectors, which accounted
for over 45% of the M&E market in 2016, is expected to decline until 2018. Overall, it
is estimated that the market will remain flat through to 2018, then return to growth
from 2019 onwards but at a modest rate of 1-2% per annum.3
