Introduction
 Information technology Act, 2000, Is to provide legal recognition
for transections carried out by means of electronic
communications.

 Information technology Act, 2000 is based on UNICITRAL


(United Nation Commission on International Trade Law) Model
law.

Introduction
 Information technology Act, 2000 has 13 Chapters, 94 sections and
4 schedules
 First 16 Sections deals with some legal aspects concerning digital
signature
 Section 17 to 42 deal with certifying authorities who are licensed to issue
digital signature certificate
 Section 43 to 47 provide for penalties and compensation
 Section 48 to 64 deals with appellate tribunals and appeal to high court
 Section 65 to 78 of the act deals with offences
 Section 79 to 94 deals with miscellaneous of the act

Digital Signature
Meaning :- A digital signature is a mathematical technique used to
validate the authentic and integrity of a message, software or digital
documents.
 In many countries, including the United States, digital signatureS
are considered legally binding in the same way as traditional
document signature.

Definition :- According to the Information technology Act, 2000
digital signature mean authentication of any electronic record by a
subscriber by means of an electronic method or procedure.

Digital Signature
Classes of Digital Signature :- There are 3 classes of Digital
Signature.
Class 1:- Class 1 signatures provide a basic level of security and are used in
environments with a law risk of data compromise. It cannot be used for legal
business documents.
Class 2:- Class 2 digital signatures authenticate a signee’s identity against a
pre-verified database. Class 2 digital signature is used in environments where
the risks and consequences of data compromise are moderate, often used for e-
filling of tax returns and Goods and Services tax (GST) returns.

Class 3:- The highest level of digital signature Class 3 signature requires a
person or organization to present in front of certifying to prove their identity
before signing. Class 3 digital signature are used for e-ticketing, etc.
