12 Measuring aerobic respiration

Three-way tap

Manometer

Manometer fluid

Organisms (Germinating seeds)

Gauze

Soda lime

1. What does a respirometer measure?

Measure the rate of respiration of germinating seeds in air.
2. Describe the purpose of the soda lime substance at the bottom of the boiling tube.
Carbon dioxide is absorbed by the soda lime.
3. Describe the purpose of the wire mesh/gauze.
To separate the organisms from the soda lime
4. State what type of living organisms can be placed in a respirometer.
Respiring organisms
5. Describe what will happen to bubble of coloured oil as organisms carry out respiration.
Give off carbon dioxide
6. Explain the purpose of the tap allowing air into the respirometer.
To give the organisms oxygen for respiration
7. Outline how rate of respiration could be determined using this apparatus.
When carbon dioxide is produced, volume is increased and push against the manometer.
8. Choose an independent variable and a species to investigate and write a research question for it.
How does the rate of respiration change in different insects?
9. List three control variables for this research question.
Glass beads same mass as insect, same amount of soda lime, same manometer
10. A student carries out an experiment investigating the effect of temperature on the rate of respiration of a
grasshopper. Here are their results.

Temperature Distance moved by the bubble in four hours (mm) Rate of respiration
(oC) Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Mean ( mm/ hour )
25 22 17 21 20 5
30 26 21 25 24 6
35 35 34 30 33 8.25

a) Calculate the mean for each temperature.

b) Use the time to calculate a rate of respiration and include the units.
c) Write a conclusion for these results.

Rate of respiration increases as temperature increases therefore temperature is directly proportional to rate of
respiration.

d) Suggest why the student did not choose high temperatures (above 40 oC) for the independent variable.

Because the enzyme that does the respiration will denature

11. Suggest why it is easier to measure rate of respiration of germinating seeds compared with full grown leafy
plants.

Because they are identical and have the same characteristics

12. Suggest how a student could measure the rate of respiration for a full grown leafy plant.

Students would need to make sure the plants all grow in the same condition and environment to ensure the
result will be more accurate.
