PROBLEMS ON PERCENTAGES

1. Calculate 25% of 90.


Solution:
25% = 25/100
90 x 25/100 = 22.5
Conclusion – Hence 25% of 90 is 22.5

2. 15% of 300 oranges are bad. How many oranges are bad?
Solution:
15% = 15/100
300 x 15/100 = 45

3. A whiteboard is reduced 20% in price in a sale. The old price was 150. Find the new
price.
Solution:
Old Price = 150
Discount on Sale = 20%
New Price = ?
20% = 20/100

Old Price - Discount on Sale = New Price


150 – (20% of 150) = New Price
150 – (20/100 x 150) = New Price
150 – 30 = New Price
New Price = 120

4. An article is purchased for Rs.1750 and sold for Rs.1985. Find the gain Percent.
Solution :
Gain = SP – CP
= 1985 – 1750
= 235

Gain in % = 235 / 1750 x 100


= 13.43%

5. A man bought 40 toys for Rs.800 and sold 35 of them at Rs.950. Find the gain or
loss percentage.
Solution: Toys Rs

Cost of 40 toys = Rs.800 40 800

Cost of 35 toys = Rs.700 35 ?

OR 35 x 800 = 700

Cost of 1 toy = Rs.20

Cost of 35 toys = 35 toys x Rs.20 each = Rs.700

= 250

Gain in % = 250 / 700 x 100

Solution:

R = 12% = 12/100

SI = 43,200

Type 2 - Finding Principal Amount

1. Find the amount of investment if the interest received after 4 years is 44,000 at the
interest rate of 11%.
Solution:
SI = Rs.44,000
R = 11%
N = 4 years

SI = PRN

44,000 = P X 11 X 4

44,000 x 100 = P x 44

44,00,000 = P x 44

44,00,000 / 44 = P
P = 1,00,000
Type 3 – Finding Rate of Interest

1. At what rate of SI will Rs. 400 amounts to Rs. 440 in 9 months


Solution:
P = 400
SI = 440-400 = 40
N = 9 months
R=?
SI = PRN

40 = 3600 x R

40 x 1200 = 3600 x R

48000 /3600 = R

R = 13.33 %

Type 4 – Finding the Period


1. If the principal amount of Rs.4,00,000 is invested at the interest rate of 15% and it
amounts to Rs.4,90,000. Then find the period for which it has been invested.
Solution:
P = 4,00,000
SI = 90,000
R = 15%
N=?
SI = PRN

90000 x 100 = 60,00,000 x N


90,00,000 = 60,00,000 x N
90,00,000 / 60,00,000 = N
N = 1.5 years OR N = 1 year and 6 months

20 students got average of 80 marks. 10 of them got average of 75, while 8 of them got
average of 70 marks. What is the average of all the students?
Solution:

Total Students = 50

12 students got average of 85 marks = 12 x 85 = 1020

20 students got average of 80 marks = 20 x 80 = 1600

10 students got average of 75 marks = 10 x 75 = 750

08 students got average of 70 marks = 08 x 70 = 560
