The McKinsey 7S Framework is a management model that describes seven

factors to organize a company in an efficient and effective way. It can be

particularly useful for a creative organization. Below are the seven
elements and how they might apply to a creative organization:

1. Strategy

The plan devised to maintain and build competitive advantage over the
competition.

Example: IDEO, a global design and consulting firm, focuses on human-

centered design to innovate and solve complex problems. Their strategy
involves deeply understanding user needs and rapidly prototyping
solutions, positioning themselves as leaders in creative problem-solving
across various industries.

2. Structure

The way the organization is structured and who reports to whom.

Example: IDEO employs a flat organizational structure, allowing team

members from different disciplines to collaborate closely. This structure
eliminates hierarchical barriers, promoting open communication and
innovation by leveraging the diverse skills and perspectives of all
employees.

3. Systems

The daily activities and procedures that staff use to get the job done.

Example: At 72andSunny, a global marketing, advertising, and design

company, systems like Slack and Asana are integral for managing projects
and fostering communication. They conduct regular brainstorming
sessions called “Co-labs” where team members from various departments
collaborate on creative solutions, ensuring continuous idea flow and
innovation.

4. Shared Values

The core values of the company that are evidenced in the corporate
culture and the general work ethic.

Example: Pixar Animation Studios values innovation, collaboration, and

storytelling excellence. These values are evident in their culture, where
employees are encouraged to share ideas openly, take creative risks, and
focus on delivering high-quality, emotionally resonant animated films.

5. Style

The style of leadership adopted.

Example: Google’s Creative Lab, known for its innovative and impactful
projects, adopts a democratic and inspirational leadership style. Leaders
at the Creative Lab encourage risk-taking, empower employees to pursue
bold ideas, and create an environment where creativity and
experimentation are celebrated.

6. Staff

The employees and their general capabilities.

Example: Wieden+Kennedy, an independent global advertising agency,

hires highly creative individuals with diverse backgrounds in graphic
design, writing, and digital arts. They prioritize continuous learning and
development, providing employees with opportunities to attend
workshops, conferences, and training sessions to stay at the forefront of
industry trends.

7. Skills

The actual skills and competencies of the employees working for the
company.

Example: R/GA, a global innovation consultancy, boasts a team with a

wide range of skills in visual design, storytelling, digital marketing, and
multimedia production. These skills enable them to create engaging and
impactful marketing campaigns for clients like Nike and Samsung,
blending creativity with technology to deliver cutting-edge solutions.
