Science WK 1 Mass Ans Weight
Science WK 1 Mass Ans Weight
LESSON OBJECTIVES
• To understand that mass is the amount of material in an object and
weight Is a force caused by gravity.
• To distinguish between mass measured in kilograms (kg) and weight
measured in newtons, noting that kilograms are used in everyday life.
What is the difference between mass and
weight?
• Mass is the amount of matter in
an object.
• We measure mass in units called
KILOGRAMS.
• We use a balance or scale to
measure mass of an object.
Mass and Weight
• Mass and weight are not the
same.
• Weight is the amount of
gravitational force.
• A gravitational force is a force
that pulls an object towards the
center of the earth.
• All objects are attracted
towards the center of the earth
by gravity.
Weight
• The bigger the mass of an
object, the bigger the force of
attraction towards the earth.
• WEIGHT is the amount of force
that pulls an object towards the
Centre of the earth.
• Objects with bigger mass
therefore have bigger weight.
• We measure weight using a unit
called NEWTON.
WEIGHT
• We use FORCEMETER to
measure weight.
• Weight of an object is ten times
the mass of the object. i.e.
• 1kg= 10N
TALK ABOUT IT
• Why do astronauts floats in
space?
ACTIVITIES(MESURING MASS AND
WEIGHT)
• Measure the mass and weight of the following materials:
• Stone
• Pile of books
Compare the readings on the weighing scales with readings on the
force meter. What pattern do you notice?
WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNT
• Mass is the amount of matter in
an object.
• Weight is the amount of force
that pull an object towards the
earth.
• We measure mass in kilograms
and weight in newtons.
• One kilograms has a force of ten
newtons on earth.
