Whether serif or sans serif, the thick and thin style of lettering relies on heavy downstrokes and
thin upstrokes to give optimum contrast for legibility.

Decorative script lettering can get fancy with ligatures, flourishes and swashes - but first, practice
those thick downstrokes & thin upstrokes, and smoothing out those connections.

Drawing at a small scale (“thumbnail sketches”) helps you to focus on the content and
layout of your piece, exploring multiple options without getting caught up in the details.
Simple shapes help to contain letters and give basic structure to your message. Have fun
exploring by trying to fit your phrase into the layout ideas below:
