Communication subsystem

Description:
This subsystem connects the satellite to the ground station and allows data transfer between the
two. It includes transmitters, receivers, antennas, and supporting software.

We designing a satellite observation system with a focus on gas exploration, especially targeting
communication subsystems, the following preferences and considerations should guide us:

1. Frequency Bands for Communication

 Use X-band (8-12 GHz) or Ka-band (26.5–40 GHz) for data transmission as they offer high
bandwidth, suitable for high-resolution observation data transfer.
 Consider UHF/VHF bands for command and telemetry to ensure robust communication over long
distances.
2. High Data Rate Communication
 Opt for high-speed communication protocols like QPSK (Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) or
DVB-S2 (Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite – Second Generation).
 Implement adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) to optimize data rates based on link quality.
3. Ground Station Network
 Integrate multiple ground stations or leverage inter-satellite links to ensure consistent data
reception and reduce latency.
4. Antenna Design
 Use a high-gain parabolic antenna for precise data communication.
 Ensure that the antenna is compatible with phased array technology to maintain beam stability
during observation.
5. Real-Time Data Processing
 Equip the communication subsystem with edge computing capabilities to process some data
onboard, reducing the burden on the downlink.
6. Interference Mitigation
 Design the subsystem with robust error correction protocols like Turbo or LDPC codes to combat
signal degradation.
 Employ filtering and signal isolation techniques to minimize interference from terrestrial or other
satellite signals.
7. Power Management
 Ensure the communication subsystem has efficient power utilization. Use Gallium Nitride (GaN)-
based amplifiers for higher efficiency and lower power consumption.
8. Environmental Factors
 Design the communication subsystem to withstand harsh conditions such as:
High radiation levels in low Earth orbit (LEO) or medium Earth orbit (MEO).
Extreme temperature variations.

9. Integration with Gas Sensing Payload

 Ensure compatibility with the gas exploration payload:
Transmit large volumes of spectral data generated by hyperspectral or multispectral sensors.
Optimize data compression methods to accommodate high-resolution imagery and spectral data.

We several software tools are commonly used at different stages of design, simulation, and
operation, like:

1. Mission Design and Simulation

 STK (Systems Tool Kit) by Ansys:
Ideal for simulating satellite orbits, communication links, and sensor coverage.
Can model Earth observation and gas exploration missions.
 GMAT (General Mission Analysis Tool):
