Present and past passive

The ancient art of Australia

Australia's oldest paintings were discovered in 2012. They were painted almost 28,000 years ago! Most ancient
pictures show the animals and birds of Australia. Some of these animals have become extinct – they aren't
found anywhere on Earth today. These images are like a photograph of a forgotten world. Amazingly, similar
paintings are produced by Australian artists today. Many pictures are made in the traditional way. The pictures
are very popular. One painting, Earth's Creation, was sold in 2007 for over $1,000,000. It was created by
Australian artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye when she was almost 80 years old!

Famous engineers: Brunel

Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806–1859) was a very important British engineer. His father was also an engineer,
but his parents were not rich. Brunel's father taught him maths and drawing before he started school.

When Brunel finished school, he worked in the family business. The company was building a tunnel under the
River Thames in London, but the work was not safe. In 1828, there was a serious accident. Brunel did not die in
the accident, but he was very ill. He went to Bristol until his health was better.

While he was in Bristol, he designed the Clifton Bridge. Work began on the bridge in June 1831, but the workers
could not finish because there was no money. Brunel had other work to do. He built a railway from London to
Bristol and some enormous ships to travel to New York. He also built many more bridges and tunnels.

Brunel worked very hard all his life, and he died in 1859. People wanted to remember him, so other engineers
finished his bridge in Bristol. Clifton Bridge opened in 1864. It is still open today. Four million cars drive across it
every year.

Personality and success

1. Read the text. Choose the correct answer.
This month's school magazine is about success. Our student writing team did some research on the
topic 'What personal qualities do you need to be successful?'. This is what we found out.
Be creative
Thinking of creative ideas and new ways to look at things can lead to a happy and successful life. Most
successful people are creative in some way.
Be strong
You need a strong personality to be successful. This doesn't mean you have to be unkind. You just have
to believe in yourself and your ideas.
Be helpful
When you help someone with a problem, they will probably want to help you in return. Many top
business people say that people they were friendly and helpful to at the start of their careers became
important contacts later on.
Be grateful
It's OK to want to achieve more and more, but be careful to remember all the good things and people
you already have in your life, and how important they are to you.
Be positive
Don't say, 'I can't do math', or 'I'm not good at sports'. According to Carol S. Dweck of Stanford
University, when we say these negative things to ourselves, we put a limit on our own success. It's better
to have a positive attitude, because this can help you to deal with losing. For example, if you fail a test,
see it as a lesson for the next time, and don't feel too unhappy about it. The important thing is to be
brave, cheerful, and to keep trying.

1 ) People who find new ways to look at things are negative/ untidy/ creative

Reading
Animal factfiles
Nature’s most energetic animals!

Sometimes, we need a reminder of what it is we are going to lose in the future if we don’t act now. The climate
change that humans have created will mean the loss of wildlife on an incredible scale. We’re going to look now
at three amazing creatures that could be affected by our warming planet.

1 ___

Researchers used to believe chimpanzees were five times stronger than humans. However, though they are
slightly stronger, the difference is not that great. Chimps’ muscles are longer than those found in humans. In
addition, chimps’ muscles are better suited to short bursts of intense activity, whereas our muscles are better
suited to longer periods of less intense activity.

2 ___

Hummingbirds’ wings can move extremely fast – up to 200 times per second – so they can fly very quickly:
upwards, sideways, backwards and even upside down! Because of this, they burn energy very quickly.
Hummingbirds feed on the nectar from flowers, small larvae and insects. They rely on the sugar that is released
from the food to fuel their rapid flying. Nearly all this energy is used up while they are flying. For this reason,
during the night, they can slow down the rate at which they burn calories by reducing their body temperature
and heart rate. This allows them to survive until the next day, when they go out looking for food again.
3 ___

The cheetah can run as fast as 120 km/h and can go from 0 to 100 km/h in under three seconds! That is faster
than a racing car! Cheetahs run in short powerful bursts rather than over long distances. Researchers have
discovered that a cheetah’s body temperature can increase dramatically after it has chased its prey. They burn
lots of calories, and this means that they need to rest after each chase. The fat and proteins in the meat they
get from their prey give them the energy they need to reach such incredible speeds.

Let’s hope that in 100 years’ time, we will still be writing about these wonderful animals, and not just in history
books.

Read the article. Match paragraphs 1–3 to headings A–C.

A Small and speedy

B Our clever cousins

C The hunter

Read the article again. Then answer the questions.

1 How strong are chimpanzees compared to humans?

2 What kind of activity are chimps’ muscles suited to?

3 Where do hummingbirds get their energy?

4 Where do cheetahs get their energy from?

Faking it

I became interested in fake photography when I was a boy. My grandmother had a photo on her wall of

a girl. She was sitting on the grass with a fairy next to her. The fairy was slightly out of focus, but it looked very
real. My grandmother said it was a real fairy. But as I grew older, I knew that the photo couldn’t be real. The
photo became very famous, but in 1988, the photo was revealed to be fake.

I began making fake photos with an old second-hand camera that my uncle gave me. One of my favourites
photos from that time was one where it looked like I was standing on the ceiling. I did it with mirrors and it was
very good. My family and friends were very impressed. I thought, I want to do this as

a job.

First, I became a wedding photographer. But in my spare time, I created pictures of aliens, men running away
from tigers, impossible storm clouds and much, much more. In time, I began to make money from these photos
as works of art. But then, along came digital cameras and the internet. Suddenly, everyone could make fake
photos. With social media, it became normal to see fake photos everywhere. They became so good that they
could fool anyone and everyone. But not me.

My job now is to help people find out if photos are fake. The police come to me for my advice. Newspapers, TV
news and governments ask me to check whether photos are real or not. The people who fake photos these days
are really good and my job is becoming more difficult. But, it pays the bills and I still make my own art in the
evenings.

Read the text. What does the writer do now?

A He creates fake photos for newspapers.

B He helps people to find out whether photos are fakes.

C He takes photos of people who are getting married.

Read the text again. Are the sentences true (T) or false (F)?

1 The writer’s grandmother said that the fairy photo was a fake. ___

2 A relative gave the writer a camera. ___

3 The writer began to sell digital cameras on the internet. ___

4 The writer still makes fake photos in his spare time
