1. An element Delta l = Delta x i is placed at the origin and carries a large


current I = 10A What is the magnetic field on the y-axis at a distance of
0.5 m. Delta*x = 1cm.
2. A current of 10 A is flowing east to west in long wire kept horizontally in
the east-west direction. Find magnetic field in a horizontal plane at a
distance of(i) 10 cm north (ii) 20 cm south from the wire; and in the
vertical plane at a distance of
(iii) 40 cm downward and (iv) 50 cm upward.
3. A long wire with a small current element of length 1 cm is placed at the
origin and carries a current of 10 A along the X-axis. Find out the
magnitude and direction of the magnetic field due to the element on the
Y-axis at a distance 0.5 m fromit.

directions of the magnetic field at points P, Q and R.

wires to be infinitely long.
6. The radius of the first orbit of hydrogen atom is 0.5 Å. The electron
moves in an orbit with a uniform speed of 2.2 * 10 ^ 6 * m * s ^ - 1
Calculate (i) the equivalent current (ii) the equivalent dipole moment
and (iii) the magnetic field produced at the centre of the nucleus due to
the motion of this electron ? Use µο / 4π = 10-7 NA-2 and electronic
charge = 1.6 * 10 ^ - 19 * C .
7. A circular coil, having 100 turns of wire, of radius (nearly) 20 cm each,
lies in the XY plane with its centre at the origin of co-ordinates. Find the
magnetic field, at the point (0, 0, 20sqrt(3) * cm) when this coil carries a
current of (2/pi) * A
8. Two coaxial circular loops L1 and L 2of radii 3 cm and 4 cm are placed
as shown. What should be the magnitude and direction of the current in
the loop L_{2} so that the net The magnetic field at the point O be
zero ?
9. A long wire having a semi-circular loop of radius r carries a current I, as
shown in Fig. Find the magnetic field due to entire wire at the point O.
10. A solenoid of length 0.5 m has a radius of 1 cm and is made up of 500
turns. It carries a current of 5 A. What is the magnitude of the magnetic
field inside the solenoid ?
11. An alpha particle is projected vertically upward with a speed of 3 *10 ^
4 * km * s ^ - 1 in a region where a magnetic field of magnitude 1.0 T
exists in the direction south to north. Find that magnetic force that acts
on the particle.
12. An electron is moving northwards with a velocity of 3 * 10 ^ 7 * m * s
^ - 1 in a uniform magnetic field of 10 T directed eastwards. Find the
magnitude and the direction of the force on the electron.
13. A positive charge of 1.5 µC is moving with a speed of 2 * 10 ^ 6 * m * s
^ - 1 along the positive X-axis. A magnetic field, vec B =(0.2 hat j +0.4
hat k ) tesla acts in space. Find the magnetic force acting on the charge.
14. An electron moving horizontally with a velocity of 4 * 10 ^ 4 * m / s
enters a region of uniform magnetic field of 10 ^ - 5 * T acting vertically
downward as shown in Fig. Draw its trajectory and find out the time it
takes to come out of the region of magnetic field
15. . An electron travels in a circular path of radius 20 cm in a magnetic
field 2 * 10 ^ - 3 * T (i) Calculate the speed of the electron. (ii) What is
the potential difference through which the electron must be accelerated
to acquire this speed ?
16. In a chamber a uniform magnetic field of 8.0 G (1G = 10 ^ - 4 * T) is
maintained. An electron with a speed of 4 * 10 ^ 6 * m * s ^ - 1 enters
the chamber in a direction normal to the field.
(i) Describe the path of the electron.
(ii) What is the frequency of revolution of the electron?(iii) What
happens to the path of the electron if it progressively loses its energy
due to collisions with the atoms or molecules of the environment ?
17. . The horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field at a certain
place is 3 * 10 ^ - 5 * T and the direction of the field is from the
geographic south to the geographic north. A very long straight
conductor is carrying a steady current of 1 A. What is the force per unit
length on it when it is placed on a horizontal table and the direction of
the current is (a) east to west, (b) south to north ?
18. A straight wire of mass 200 g and length 1.5 m carries a current of 2 A.
It is suspended in mid-air by a uniform horizontal magnetic field vec B
What is the magnitude of the magnetic field?
19. A solenoid 60 cm long and of radius 4.0 cm has 3 layers of windings of
300 turns each. A 2.0 cm long wire of mass 2.5 g lies inside the solenoid
near its centre normal to its axis; both the wire and the axis of the
solenoid are in the horizontal plane. The wire is connected through two
leads parallel to the axis of the solenoid to an external battery which
supplies a current of 6.0 A in the wire. What value of current in the
windings of the solenoid can support the weight of the wire? g = 9.8 ms-
2.
20. A rectangular loop of sides 25 cm and 10 cm carrying a current of 15 A
is placed with its longer side parallel to a long straight conductor 2.0 cm
apart carrying a current of 25 A. What is the net force on the loop ?
21. A rectangular coil of sides 8 cm and 6 cm having 2000 turns and
carrying a current of 200 mA is placed in a uniform magnetic field of 0.2
T directed along the + ve X-axis. What is the maximum torque the coil
can experience? In which orientation does it experience the maximum
torque ?(ii) For which orientations of the coil is the torque zero? When is
this equilibrium stable and when is it unstable ?
22. A rectangular coil of area 5 * 10 ^ - 4 m and 60 turns is pivoted about
one of its vertical sides. The coil is in a radial horizontal field of 90 G
('radial' here means the field lines are in the plane of the coil for any
orientation). What is the torsional constant of the hair-springs
connected to the coil if a current of 0.20 m² produces an angular
deflection of 18° ?
23. A rectangular coil having each turn of length 5 cm and breadth 2 cm is
suspended freely in a radial magnetic field of induction 25 * 10 ^ - 2 *
Wb * m ^ - 2 torsional constant of the suspension fibre is 1.5 * 10 ^ - 8
* Nm rad^ -1 The coil deflects through an angle of 0.2 radian when a
current of 2 µA is passed through it. Find the number of turns of the coil.
24. . To increase the current sensitivity of a moving coil galvanometer by
50%, its resistance is increased so that the new resistance becomes
twice its initial resistance. By what factor does its voltage sensitivity
change?
25. The coil of a galvanometer is 0.02m * 0.08m It consists of 200 turns of
fine wire and is in a magnetic field of 0.2 tesla. The restoring torque
constant of the suspension fibre is 10 ^ - 6 Nm deg¹. Assuming the
magnetic field to be radial, (a) what is the maximum current that can be
measured y to by this galvanometer, if the scale can accommodate 30°
deflection? (b) What is the smallest current that can be detected, if the
minimum observable deflection is 0.1 degree?
