Q1: Describe what is ‘Data’ and list two examples.

[3m]
A collection of words or numbers with no given meaning. Examples are 87654 and ACBSD

3 marks
Q2: There are two types of ‘Data sources’ name and
explain each.[4m]
Direct and Indirect data sources.Direct data sources
is data that you collect yourself for that specific
purpose.Indirect Data sources is data that was
collected for a different purpose and was collected
by someone else.

Q3: A sports shop wants to find out what the other shops
are charging for trainers. Using direct source what are the
steps need to be used to gather the information.[3m]
Direct data source would be going to each shop yourself
and seeing the prices of the trainers. Then you record each
price of the trainers then you have the data to compare
prices

Q4: A sports shop wants to find out what the other
shops are charging for trainers. Using indirect source
what are the steps need to be used to gather the
information.[2m]

Make a survey and asking each customer how much

each trainer cost. By requesting or asking the
customer to show the price tag/receipt.

1 mark
Q5: List two advantages of gathering from ‘Direct
sources’ [2m]

Gathering original data that can be trusted, No

unnecessary data would need to be filtered out. Data
would be up to date

2 marks
Q6: List two advantages of gathering from ‘Indirect
sources’ [2m]

Direct data source allows you to get a lot of

information very quickly as all the data has already
been collected. Indirect data is cheaper and less time
consuming then direct data source
Q7: The quality of information is determined by number
of attributes. List the three attributes.[3m]
Age: how old the data is
Relevance: is the information related to the topic at
hand
Accuracy: Is the data true and is it correct

3 marks
Q8: Describe how the age of information could affect
the quality of information within a user guide for a
mobile phone.[3m]
As a user guide for a mobile phone the older the user
guide is the less useful it would be as the phone gets
updated the way to use the OS would be different
and certain features such as maybe how to use a
certain function ie screenshot would be different as if
they found a more efficient option

Q9: What is encryption? [2m]
Encryption is coding in a way that can’t be understood
unless someone has the key to decrypt thus
protecting sensitive information

2 marks
Q10: Caesar Cipher is a secret way of writing.
Describe? [3m]
It’s a way to encrypt data by shifting the alphabet this
makes the information unreadable unless you know
what the key is. For example Adam → BEBN seeing
bebn you wouldn’t know it is my name

3 marks
Q11:Explain the image given.
It’s an asymmetric encryption.
Asymmetric uses both a private
and public key.The image
shows tomasz using a public
key to encrypt the data while
Helene uses her own private
key to decrypt the data
Q12: In order to find a public key, digital certificates are
required which identify the user or server and provide
the public key. A digital certificate is
………………………………… and the certificate
includes: [6m]
a.unique
B.email address
C.organization name
D.users country
E.public key
a) Validation is used to make sure data was copied correctly
b) You have to validata the courses one way could be a double entry having
to enter the data twice would make sure no mistake is accidentally copied
into the news story. Thus any thing that was copied incorrectly the system
would be alerted
Q13: Describe on ‘Validation’. [8m]
Validation is making sure that data is copied correctly from
the source.
Visual checking is looking over the data with the human eye
and identifying any errors
Double data entry is entering all data twice and the computer
seeing if the data matches
Hash total is counting the ones and zeros in a code and
making sure it following that pattern ie even number of 1s if
the data doesn't follow this it’s alerted by the system as an
error
Q14: Describe on ‘Verification’. [8m]
Is making sure that data makes a logical sense as they do
not break fundamental logic someone alive today being
3000 years old
Range check is making sure data falls between a certain
range ie age being 0<x<120
Lookup check is checking whether the data exists in a given
list example a color list and seeing if the data falls between it
Limit check is seeing whether it exceeds a logical limit ie
someone having a 1 quadrillion dollars in their bank account
Past year papers questions
Answer:
Verification and validation is important to make
sure data is accurate and correct. As the date
join in the database is wrong by one year a
verification check such as a double data entry
would most likely found this mistake or even a
visual check would have found this mistake. The
validation would also be needed to see if data is
possible as if the most hours have is 8hrs a
week 5 days a week. 56 working hours wouldn't
be possible thus the data would be valid or if the
minimum was 6hrs 3 days a week then
someone couldn’t have worked less by using
range check for rate of pay.Format check for the
dates to make sure the dates follow a specific
format. The id numbers for 3 is longer thus a
length check is needed to make sure their all the
same length
Answer: Questionnaire is more
time consuming as it takes
more time to collect the data.
Electoral register data is
available. Questionnaire more
expensive in collecting the data
compare with Electoral register
data has limited information
field. For Questionnaires need
to have a data entry clerk and
costly. Don’t have to make a
many trip to council office as
the Electoral already compile all
the information in one time.
