Reciprocal of a Quadratic Function

● All the y-coordinates of the reciprocal function are the reciprocals of the
y-coordinates of the original function.
● The reciprocal function has a vertical asymptote at every x-intercept of the
original function.
● The horizontal asymptote of the reciprocal is y = 0.
● The reciprocal has the same positive/negative intervals as the original function.
● Intervals of increase on the original function are intervals of decrease on the
reciprocal. Intervals of decrease become intervals of increase on the reciprocal.
● The parabola and its reciprocal will intersect when y = 1 or y = -1.
● If the original has a local min point, the reciprocal will have a local max point at
the same x-value.
Examples
1. Given the function f(x) = x2 + 2x - 15

a) Determine the domain and range, intercepts, positive/negative intervals, and

increasing/decreasing intervals
b) Use your answers for part a) to sketch the graph of the reciprocal function
2. Given the function f(x) = (x - 3)2 + 1

a) Determine the domain and range, intercepts, positive/negative intervals, and

increasing/decreasing intervals
b) Use your answers for part a) to sketch the graph of the reciprocal function
