Problem 1: Let’s assume that we flip a coin five times and define a random X as the number of heads
obtained. Please calculate the probability of obtaining only one head out of these five trials.

Problem 2: We know that the 1 % of the licenses of a computer program do not work properly. If a
company acquires 50 licenses.
Problem 3: The faculties of a certain University are opened 14 hours per day. Professors of that
University are in their rooms 7 hours per day. Let’s assume that a student tries to contact with a
Professor 5 times in a day (going directly to the Professor’s room).
Calculate the probability of finding the Professor in his/her room between three and four
times
Calculate the standard deviation of the distribution.
If we know that the student found to the Professor in his/her room more than once,
calculate the probability that the student found to the Professor in his/her room less than
four times.
Problem 4: In a quality assurance process, in each batch with 24 products, two out of these 24 are
randomly selected, and the batch is accepted if both products are in good conditions. Let’s
assume that there is five defective products per batch, and the sampling is done with
replacement.
Define the probability distribution of the random variable X “number of defective products
in a batch”
Calculate the probability of accepting a batch.
Problem 5: In a document with 500 pages, 30 misprints are distributed randomly along the total 500
pages of the manuscript under study. Calculate that in a page we found
Problem 6: In a factory of adhesive tapes, the number of defectives in the adhesive tapes follows a
Poisson distribution with a mean of 0.15 defectives per square meter. Calculate the probability
that there is no failures in 15 square meters.
Problem 7: A call center of a customer service receives, on average, 4.2 telephone calls per minute. If
the calls follow a Poisson distribution, what is the probability of receiving at least three calls in a
given minute?
Problem 8: Three different computers are checked from 10 in a certain department. Four out of the
10 computers have illegal software loaded. What is the probability that 2 out of the 3 selected
computers have illegal software loaded?
Problem 9: A person goes to the airport with five suitcases, two of them with money which come
from a tax haven. In the office, only two suitcases are registered. What is the probability of being
caught?
Problem 10: We have 9 tomato pot which are expired. Only three out of these 9 are really in poor
conditions. Assuming that four tomato pot are randomly selected, please compute:

More than half are in poor conditions.
Expected value and variance.
Problem 11: A soccer player has a 20 % chance of scoring a goal every time he shoot a goal. If the
soccer player make 5 shots, calculate:
Problem 12: The number of people using an ATM in periods of one hour follows a Poisson
distribution with mean 5. Calculate:
