Designing a Roller Coaster

Mathematical Methods IA1

Dreamworld Roller Coaster Design

Introduction
The Steel Dragon 2000, located in Nagashima, Japan, holds the title for the longest roller
coaster worldwide. Inspired by its thrilling design, Dreamworld on the Gold Coast,
Queensland, aims to introduce a new roller coaster to enhance excitement for park visitors.
This report outlines the development of a mathematical model for a 2D roller coaster design
using various mathematical functions, complying with design specifications for safety and
thrill factor. The model incorporates polynomial, exponential, trigonometric, and
logarithmic functions, ensuring smooth transitions and adherence to constraints such as
steepness limits.

Observations and Assumptions

The following observations and assumptions form the basis of this roller coaster design:

 The coaster track starts and ends at ground level, represented by y=0.
Support structures are placed at intervals, ensuring safety and stability.
The maximum height is set to 100 meters, while the horizontal displacement reaches up
to 500 meters.
The steepest descent angle does not exceed 75 degrees to ensure safety.

Mathematical Concepts and Techniques

This roller coaster design utilizes multiple mathematical concepts, including differentiation
to calculate steep gradients and piecewise functions for continuous transitions. The types of
functions chosen—polynomial, exponential, and trigonometric—offer varying profiles, each
contributing unique aspects to the roller coaster's shape.

Solution Development
The roller coaster profile is represented by a series of piecewise functions, f01(x) to f10(x),
each tailored to meet the ride's structural and thrill requirements. Below is a breakdown of
each segment:

f01(x) = 2 sin(π/6 x) + 5, 0 ≤ x ≤ 9

f02(x) = -0.037832x^2 + 0.669782x, 9 < x ≤ 15

f03(x) = -1.3876 × 10^-7 e^x + 2.08911, 14.99 < x ≤ 16.8

f04(x) = 315042 · e^-0.669782x - 4.74333, 16.8 ≤ x ≤ 25

f05(x) = 0.000587234x^3 - 0.0222432x^2, 25 ≤ x ≤ 50

f06(x) = 0.0364743x^2 - 1.46779x, 50 ≤ x ≤ 70

f07(x) = -28123.4 · log7.23(x - 2.61)^-6.94 + 224.698, 70 ≤ x ≤ 150

f08(x) = -0.00509512x^2 + 1.95853x, 150 ≤ x ≤ 400

f09(x) = -0.0000122411x^3 + 0.00469765x^2, 400 ≤ x ≤ 471

f10(x) = 18.687 · log0.089(x + 0.4)^5 + 1756.72, 471 ≤ x ≤ 500

Evaluation and Verification

The design adheres to the given requirements and safety constraints. Each segment was
evaluated for continuity and steepness, ensuring no abrupt changes in the rider's path.
Strengths of this design include the adherence to safety standards and a variety of function
types, creating an exciting and safe ride profile. Limitations include the simplified 2D model
and rounded parameter values.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the roller coaster model was successfully developed using various
mathematical functions, ensuring both safety and thrill. Calculus was essential in calculating
gradients and smooth transitions. The final design satisfies all specifications, providing a
viable blueprint for Dreamworld’s new attraction.
