Introduction
As the latest generation Surface dock, Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock delivers ultra-high speed data transfer 1, built-in
enterprise management and security 2 and the versatility to connect your most important peripherals.

• High-speed USB4®/Thunderbolt™ 4 on USB-C® ports. Plug in one cable to power your device and connect
two 4K monitors at up to 60 Hz. 3 Transfer data and files at up to 40 Gbps.
• The charging power you need for your device and accessories. Connect and power your laptop with up to
96 watts of power passthrough for your phone and accessories. 4
• Inclusive design with recycled materials. Quickly identify ports with raised tactile indicators for greater
accessibility. The lightest Surface dock and PSU enclosures (excluding AC cable) are attributed to 20% ocean-
bound plastic 5 and ~99% recyclable packaging in OECD countries that’s free of single-use plastics. 6

What’s the difference between the “designed for” and “compatible with” devices?
• We designed Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock as the optimal dock for Surface devices with USB4/Thunderbolt 4
support. The Thunderbolt 4 connection supports two 4K external displays at up to 60 Hz (when supported by
display).

• Devices with USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 support can transfer data and files at up to 32 Gbps — four times faster
than USB3.

• For compatible devices, the USB-C connection supports one 4K external display at up to 60 Hz (when
supported by display). 12

TIP: With daisy chaining, Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock supports up to ten displays through DP Alt Mode but note
that the resolution and refresh rate will be reduced when daisy chaining two or more monitors. All monitors need
to support DP1.2 and Multi-Stream Transport (MST).

• Yes, you need to connect the dock to a Windows-based PC to receive firmware updates via Windows Update.
Or you can use Surface App on Surface devices to update the firmware or features.

• No, the dock has no system on a chip (SOC). Enterprise-grade manageability and security support refer to

SEMM for Dock, firmware updates through Windows Update, and management features that support
connected host devices such as MAC Address Passthrough and Wake on LAN.

Was this dock tested with OEM devices, and if so, will we have a list of which devices at launch?
• Yes, this dock was tested with various OEM devices. Regarding a published list, we only include Surface
devices as we cannot guarantee long-term support for non-Surface OEM devices. In general, if an OEM
device has a USB4/Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port and runs a supported version of Windows, we expect customers
to have a good experience with it.

Is there support for Apple Mac or Linux?

• Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock supports compatible USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 devices, including Apple Mac or
Linux.

Does it work with an M2 chip-based Mac?

• The dock should support external monitors, power, Ethernet, and USB functionality on the dock with any PC
with a USB4/Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port. Please note that firmware updates for the dock can only be done
through Windows Updates or the Surface App.

How can I get driver or firmware updates using an Apple Mac?

• You must connect the dock to a Windows-based PC and run Windows Update.

Which version of Windows is required to run Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock?

• Unlike previous Surface Docks, Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock has no specific OS requirement. It's designed to
run on run devices with USB4/Thunderbolt 4 or USB-C ports.

Does Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock work with other (non-Surface) devices?

• Yes, it does. No additional software is required beyond the automatic installation of device drivers when
connecting Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock for the first time.
• For IT-managed devices, an MSI installation package will also be available from the Microsoft Download
Center.

What is the Mount option for Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock?

• The Cable Matters Desk Mount is purpose-built for Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock and Designed for Surface

Display & monitor support

What monitors have been tested with Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock?"

• We tested more than 100 different monitors with Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock. For a list of tested monitors,
refer to Tested peripherals for new Surface devices .

Can I daisy chain monitors with Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock?

• You can daisy chain monitors by connecting a series of display devices using a wired connection from
monitor to monitor in a series rather than connecting each monitor directly to the Surface Thunderbolt 4
Dock.
• Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock supports up to eight displays through DP Alt Mode but note that the resolution
and refresh rate will be reduced when daisy chaining two or more monitors. All monitors need to support
DP1.2 and Multi-Stream Transport (MST).

• Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock supports up to two monitors through USB4/Thunderbolt 4, with full refresh rate
and resolution supported on those two monitors.

How do I daisy chain monitors?

• To daisy chain monitors, you need two or more monitors that support at least DisplayPort 1.2 and Multi-
Stream Transport (MST). Displays that function as a middle link in the chain must include DisplayPort output
ports and input ports and support MST. You also need a video or graphics card (GPU) on your PC that
supports DisplayPort 1.2. and MST.
• To connect your PC to multiple monitors using DisplayPort MST:

1. Connect your PC to the DisplayPort-In connection on the first monitor.

2. Connect the DisplayPort-Out connection on the first monitor to the DisplayPort-In connection on the
second monitor. To daisy chain more than two monitors, follow a similar sequence: The first monitor
connects to the second, the second monitor connects to the third, and so on.
3. Use the On-Screen Display (OSD) menu to enable DisplayPort 1.2 on your monitor. To learn more, refer to
the user manual of your monitor.

NOTE: The number of supported monitors, refresh rate, and resolution are limited by the lowest denominator of
what's supported across the host, dock, and monitor.

Will Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock support 5K monitors?

• Yes, a single 5K monitor at 60 Hz and dual 5K monitors at 30 Hz.14This would be 8K (7680 x 4320) 30 Hz with
10-bit color. This would not work on non-thunderbolt host devices.

How can I connect an HDMI monitor to Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock?

• A USB-C to HDMI adapter is required. See:

Which USB-C ports can I connect monitors to?

• You can connect monitors from the front or rear USB4 ports.

Can the two-rear facing USB-C ports be used for other USB Alt Mode traffic other than
DisplayPort?
• Rear USB-C ports support the negotiation of USB Power Delivery (PD) contracts at a maximum of 7.5W. Audio
Accessory Mode and Thunderbolt 3 are not supported.

Does Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)?
• Yes. HDCP is designed to prevent copying digital audio and video content as it travels across connections.

Managing Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock

How can IT admins manage Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock?

• Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock can be managed via surface enterprise management mode and Windows
Management Instrumentation (WMI). To learn more, see:

Why would I manage Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock via SEMM?

• SEMM for Dock enables you to manage UEFI firmware settings and configure port access control. It requires
the installation of a host provisioning package generated via the Surface UEFI Configurator or Surface UEFI
Manager.

Does Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock support Wake on LAN?

• IT admins can remotely wake host devices from Modern Standby when connected to Surface Thunderbolt 4

Can IT admins manage Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock with Intune and DFCI?
• No. Cloud-based management via Intune, such as DFCI, is not supported currently.

How can I make a warranty claim or get support for Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock?
• To make a warranty claim or to request support, use one of the self-serve portal options:
− Surface Management Portal
− Microsoft Hardware Support Portal

• Support for serialized accessories was introduced in March 2023.

Can I use Surface App to update the firmware?

• Yes. To update firmware:
1. Launch Surface app and view the connected accessories shown at the bottom of the app. Select Surface
Thunderbolt 4 Dock.
2. Select Firmware Update and then select Update.
3. After installing the update, disconnect and reconnect your Surface device from the dock.

Can I update firmware automatically with Windows Update?

• Yes, Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock supports automatic firmware and driver updates via Windows Update. A
host device reset or restart is not required.

Does Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock support MAC Address Passthrough?

• Yes.

Why would I need MAC Address Passthrough?

• One of the challenges of using multiple docks or shared workspaces is to ensure that your device has a

Can Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock be used to fast charge devices?

• Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock can supply up to 15 W of host power, including enough power for fast charging
on all current fast-charging-enabled Surface devices.

Can I fast charge cell phones and other small devices using USB-C ports?
• Yes. Front and rear ports provide up to 15 W of power to connected devices.

Can I charge my Surface device from a USB-C port?

• No. The USB-C port does not charge your Surface device or any device that requires more than 15 W. You
can charge your Surface device via the USB4/Thunderbolt 4 cable.

Physical design and usage

How large is the power brick compared to the current gen?

• Both the dock and the power supply of Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock are slimmer and lighter than earlier
Surface docks.

How do I find the serial number?

• It is located at the bottom of the dock. You can also find the serial number from the Surface App or via WMI.

Is it okay to close the laptop lid when connected to Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock?
• Yes. You may need to modify power settings on the host Surface device to prevent the automatic entry of
sleep or display off during lid closure to retain device usability.

When connecting a Surface device, will Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock automatically switch from
Wi-Fi to Ethernet for network connectivity?
• Yes.

Do we recommend a specific USB-C or USB4/Thunderbolt 4 cable type?

• USB-C cables should generally conform to USB-C and USB power delivery standards, although quality and
performance may vary. Check your display manual to determine if a specific type of USB-C cable is
