Syllabus - AE590 - 2024 (Origami Engineering)
Course Introduction
Objectives
- Understand the behavior of folding mechanisms
- Learn how to design a folding pattern for desired shapes and movements
Contents
- Basic origami theory and terminology
- Origami design tools and simulators
- Representative origami patterns and applications
- Origami mechanism prototyping (Lab activity)
About term project
About half of the course will be dedicated to a term project. The students will be asked to design their
own foldable applications (space structures, shelters, furniture, or any others) and make miniature
models of them. Accordingly, the course contains prototyping tool training, which includes CAD, laser
machining, and 3D printing. The team-building policy will be announced later, considering the number
of enrollees of the course. During the project period, each team is expected to have a weekly project
meeting with the course instructor.
