Course Description
Rationale: This course serves as an introduction to the practice of chemical
engineering. Specifically, it deals with the unit processes and operations involved in
selected chemical industries
Focus: . This will help the students to familiarize with different unit operations and
processes and also help them familiarize with the major equipment in the chemical
process industries. Also, in this course the process flow diagram, starting from the first
step into a finished product will be discussed. They will be able to learn also the
common problems and the possible solutions encountered in the field. This course will
help the students learn the common waste and the steps to minimize waste ant to
convert them to good products.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Distinguish between a unit operation and a unit process
2. Learn the processing or raw materials into usable and profitable products
3. Integrate chemical engineering concepts in the solution of real industries
problems
4. Understand the common wastes
5. Convert wastes into good products
6. Produce products at low cost but with good quality
7. Familiarize students with the process flow symbols used in industries

Part 4 - Course Policies

Attendance

It is the responsibility of the students to come to class on schedule and on time.

Attendance will be checked regularly. Students who have incurred more than 20% of
the total number of lecture hours will be dropped. Attendance will also be part of
computation of your grade as part of your course requirement.

Major Exam/Quizzes

All exams are announced and must be given on the scheduled dates.

Students are encouraged to pay their monthly dues and secure test permit from
the accounting office prior to the major examination.

Make up exam and quiz would only be given to students with VALID reasons like
illness (with medical certificate) and/or death of a family member. Make up exam will be
given not later than a day before the next exam.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to maintain academic integrity at all times. Avoid cheating
during quizzes, assignments, problem sets and major exams in any form. Cheating is
equivalent to zero on that particular quiz, assignment, problem set and major exams

Submission of Requirements
Students are expected to submit their outputs/requirements on or before the
stipulated date set by the teacher. Late submission of requirements would be equivalent
to 20% deduction to your score per day.

Part 5 – Evaluative Criteria

Final Grade will be computed as shown below. And final grade must be equal or above
75% to pass the subject.

20 % - Quizzes (short and long quizzes)

40 % - Major Exams (Prelim, Midterm, Semi final and Final Exams)
35 % - Course Requirements (Recitation, Class Standing and Participation, at
least 2 major requirements)
5% - Attendance
