L.I: To answer VIPER questions about the text ‘The Lion, the Witch and
the wardrobe.’
Answers:
1. The term ‘fallen on their feet’ means that the children’s situation(of going to the
professor’s house) ended up well although there was a chance that it might not have
gone well.
2. A row is an argument or disagreement.
3. In this case a wireless could be a radio.
4. In the story, odd or strange could be used as synonyms for queer.
5. Inquisitive means to be curious.
6. Peter may think that the professor would let them do whatever they like because he
is old and would want them to enjoy themselves. OR Maybe because Peter thinks
the professor is rich and is only too happy to have children in his big house playing.
7. Edmund was in a bad mood because he was tired.
8. The children were annoyed it was raining because it was preventing them from going
outside to play.
9. The chapter probably ends with a speech from the faun because in the following
chapter, there might be some interaction between him and Lucy. His speech at the
end of chapter 1 could be the author just introducing him to the reader.
10. Many different things can happen to the children when they explore the house.
Possibly all of them finding the wardrobe and meeting Lucy and the faun. Possibly
they could discover secrets that the professor have inside the house.

11. My Prediction is that Lucy and the faun may have an argument and then they will
become friends. (Predictions are never really wrong – it’s just a sensible guess).
12. I think that the writer shifted from dialogue to narration so he could describe the
setting and create images in the reader’s mind of how the setting/surroundings in the story
looked.
13. I would have ran back because when my siblings left, I would have been to scared to
continue walking further into the wardrobe without them. OR I would have continued
walking further into the wardrobe because I would have wanted to explore and find out
more about what was inside the wardrobe.
14. The four children are Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy.
15. The story is set during World War 2.
16. Lucy was initially afraid of the professor because he was ‘odd-looking.’
17. The noise was probably a bird or owl like the other children suggested.
18. Lucy rubbed the coats on her face because she liked the smell and feel of fur.
19. It seems as if Lucy found another world in the wardrobe.
20. Read over the last page of the chapter and have a go at drawing the faun.

Answers:
1. Some examples that show that the faun is polite is when he says ‘ Good evening. Good
evening.’ AND when he sad “forgive me.”
2. A melancholy voice is like a sad voice.
3. Bawled tells me that Lucy was shouting/yelling at Mr. Tumnus.
4. Initially, I would have thought that he bowed to be polite and show respect but after
reading the entire chapter I think that he bowed to pretend to be respectful so that he could
get Lucy to believe that he was a kind faun.
5. I think that when the faun says ‘Daughter of Eve and Son of Adam’ he is referring to Adam
and Eve who were the first people on Earth according the bible. When the faun says that he
may be thinking that Lucy and her siblings might be Adam and Eve’s children.
6. Lucy may have found the cave nice because the faun had decorated it in a cosy way with
carpet and a dresser and interesting books. It was also warm unlike the outside, that was
cold.
7. I don’t think he wants her to go because the text explains that if the Witch finds out he
has allowed Lucy to go, she will cut off his tail and horns and pluck his beard. He was crying
and worried that these things would happen to him. Given that he was so sad and worried
about what might happen to him if Lucy went, I don’t think he wanted her to go.
8. I think Lucy feels that she needs to go because she knows that her siblings would be
worried about her if they could not find her.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
9. I think Mr. Tumnus did not think that humans were nice but when he met Lucy he felt
that she was a nice person. Because he feels that she was nice, he felt that he could not
kidnap her and that is why he told her what he had initially intended to do to her.
10. The title ‘What Lucy finds there’ tells us that there is a whole city (Narnia) behind the
wardrobe. I predict that Lucy would tell her siblings about it when she returns to the house
and they would all go back there.
11. Now that Lucy is home, I think that she will tell her siblings what she found in Narnia.
She may get into trouble with the professor if he found out that she had left the house.
12. At that point of the text, I did not think Lucy would go to Mr. Tumnus’ house for tea
because I felt that she would know that she should not be talking to strangers and that she
definitely should not be going to a stranger’s house for tea. On the other side, I also
thought that she might have gone as this is a story and it may be the author’s way of
creating excitement and suspense to hook the reader into finding out what happens next.
13. The faun asked Lucy if she was the daughter of Eve.
14. The faun’s name is Mr. Tumnus.
15. Lucy is in Narnia.
16. For tea, Mr. Tumnus offers Lucy toast, sardines and cake.
17. Mr. Tumnus lives in a cave

Answers:
1. Amazement is when someone is shocked or surprise.
2. Batty in this context means crazy or unbelievable.
3. A hoax is a trick.
4. In this context ‘of its own accord’ means by itself without anyone’s help or support.
5. Lucy is initially confused because she felt like she was gone for a long time and that
her siblings would miss her but when she got back, they were not worried and said
that they felt like she was only gone for a short time - playing hide and seek.
6. When the wardrobe went back to normal, Lucy was confused because she thought
whenever they opened it, they would be able to enter Narnia and that did not
happen.
7. We can tell that Edmund is in Narnia because he suddenly felt very cold.
8. He shivers in Narnia because it is cold like in the winter and he is not dressed for that
type of weather with a coat, sweater or any other winter clothes.
9. The Queen is annoyed because Edmund did not address her as a queen should be
addressed. She might also be annoyed because Edmund does not even know who
she is.
10. I predict when Edmund gets into the wardrobe, he will enter Narnia, meet the queen
and be kidnapped by her.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
11. I think the queen will take Edmund away and keep him in Narnia as her servant.
(Remember that your predictions could be any ‘sensible’ guess).
12. I think the wardrobe went back to normal because the weather was sunny. I think that
only when it is raining outside the professor’s house, the wardrobe can take people to
Narnia.
13. Yes I like Edmund because he is quite funny in the way he teases Lucy. He would be fun
to have as a friend. OR No, I do not like Edmund because he was teasing Lucy and that was
very mean.
14. When the Queen first came into the story she shouted ‘Stop!’ to the reindeer. That was
quite mean. She was also very blunt with Edmund because he did not know to address her
as a queen. Because of this, my first impression of her is that she is person who is
mean/horrible to others.
15. So far, only Edmund and Lucy went into the wardrobe. When they went in, they both
ended up in Narnia.
16. Reindeer were pulling the sledge.
17. Summary – example:
Lucy returned to the house and found her siblings. They did not miss her. She was a bit hurt and asked if they thought
something had happened to her. They joked and thought that she was hiding and no one came to seek her. Lucy tried
to explain where she was but no one believed her. She became cross because she knew that she was telling the truth.
Days passed with good weather then a day of rain came again so they decided to play hide and seek. Lucy went back
into the wardrobe. Edmund followed her and they both ended up back in Narnia.

Answers:
1. In this story, Turkish delight is an ‘addictive’ food that the witch gives to people that
makes them sick and sometimes even worse.
2. Dominions in this story is the land of Narnia.
3. Flushed means that in Edmund’s face Lucy can see that he was anxious. Edmund was
‘flushed’ because he was anxious or a bit worried when he saw Lucy.
4. Poor sport in this context is not making the right/best choice in the situation.
5. The Queen thinks Edmund is an idiot because he does not know of her or was not able
to answer most of her questions.
6. I think the Queen wants Edmund to bring his siblings so that she can capture all four of
them and keep them in Narnia working as servants for her.
7. Edmund wants to go and get his siblings because he thinks that if he brings them to
the queen, he will become the prince and get a lot of Turkish delight.
8. I think that he does not want to bring them because he feels that he may have to share
the Turkish delight with them and he does not want to do that.
9. The Queen does not want Edmund to tell his siblings about her because:
- She does not want them to become suspicious of her and not come.
- She wants to surprise them when they come so she could easily capture them.
- She wants to capture the siblings and Edmund in one go and does not want to make
Edmund aware of her plans.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
10. I predict that all of the siblings will go to Narnia and when they do, they will meet Faun,
the queen and the other characters that live there.
11. The Queen got Edmund to side with her by giving him Turkish delight and convincing him
that she wants him to be the future prince of Narnia.
12. Edmund got into the sledge because:
- The queen instructed him to do so and he was too scared to do otherwise.
- He was cold and wanted to get into the sledge so that he could warm up.
13. The drink came from when the queen dropped some liquid unto the snow and a cup of
hot drink was formed.
14. Edmund asked for Turkish delight.
15. Edmund wanted to go to the Queen’s house immediately because he wanted to have
more of the Turkish delight.
16. The queen’s house is between two hills.
Queen’s perspective:
I was on my way home when I saw a human roaming around my kingdom. When I asked him questions,
he did not seem to know much. He was shivering so I offered him room on my sleigh. He was hungry and
asked for Turkish delight. Upon questioning, I realised that he had brothers and sisters so I decided to
trick him into bringing them back to Narnia so that I can keep them all as my servants. He mentioned that
his sister has already been here and made friends with Faun. That silly Faun did not mention this so he
will be punished. I know how addictive those Turkish delight are so my ‘prince’ will definitely be
returning…falling right into my evil trap.

Answers:
1. Some words that may describe Edmund might be – mean, unkind, manipulative,
dishonest, disloyal. There could be many more…
2. In that incident, savagely means angrily or fiercely.
3. Edmund chose to make Lucy look like a fool because he was following the queen’s
instructions. He did not want to tell the others about the other world or about the
queen until he took them to Narnia so he lied about it until he could get them all in
Narnia. He thought once he did this, he would become the prince and get all of the
Turkish delight that he wanted.
4. I think that Lucy was crying because:
- She felt betrayed by Edmund.
- She knew that she was telling the truth but felt that her siblings did not believe her.
- She was hurt because she knew that Edmund was making her look like a liar when she
was not.
5. The children were shocked when the professor asked if it could be true because they
thought that it was not true (because they had checked the wardrobe) and thought that
any logical thinking adult would not believe that there could be a ‘magical’ kingdom
behind a wardrobe.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
6. Now that they are all in the wardrobe, I predict that they will all go to Narnia and they will
meet the queen and the faun. I think so because those are the characters that the others
met, when they went to Narnia.
7. I think that the professor is very open –minded and thinks that anything is possible. I
don’t believe that the average adult will believe that a magical kingdom exist but the
professor seemed open to the idea that this is possible. Because he is open to new/different
ways of thinking, is why I think he is open-minded.
The professor could also be thought of as logical. You may think he is logical in the way that
he explained that Lucy could either be telling the truth or lying, but he was certain that she
had not gone crazy. He also explained that based on the evidence that they had (up until
then) that they should assume that Lucy was telling the truth.
8. The game of hide and seek ended in the wardrobe.
9. Everyone stopped mentioning the wardrobe because Lucy and Edmund got into an
argument about it. Talking about the wardrobe brought fights amongst the siblings so they
thought it would be best to not talk about it and avoid any more arguments.
10. The children hid from Mrs. Macready because she had warned them before, that
whenever she is touring people around the house, they should ‘keep out of their way.’ They
hid because they wanted to stay out of her way.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
11. This chapter was surprising. I think that it was surprising for 2 reasons:
- Edmund lied about Narnia existing. I thought he would have supported Lucy’s story and
tell the others about Narnia.
- It was also surprising that the professor (an adult) was open to the idea that a magical
kingdom exist as I did not think a grown would think that.
