Draw the Blackbody radiation spectrum for three

different temperatures (T). Further, for one temperature,
graphically show how Wein’s law and Rayleigh-Jeans
law compares with the experimental Blackbody
radiation spectrum. (5 marks)
10 CO2 BL4
1

By integrating the Planck’s formula for the Blackbody

radiation with respect to all possible frequencies, find
out how the area under the curve increases with
temperature. (5 marks)

(a) Explain the the Heisenberg uncertainty relation.

Discuss why the uncertainty relation is insignificant
for macroscopic objects. 5
CO2 BL5
2 (b) When an X-ray photon of wavelength 0.2nm
strikes an electron at rest, the electron recoils with a 5
kinetic energy of 25 eV. Find the angle at which
the photon scatters with respect to its incident
direction.
5
3
(a) Derive time independent Schrodinger equation
from the time dependent Schrodinger equation
for the time independent potentials.

(b) An unknown single crystal is used as a target in 5 CO2 BL5

the Davisson-Germer experimental set-up. When
electrons are accelerated towards the target by
applied potential of 60 volts, a high-intensity
peak corresponding to first order diffraction
appears in the detector at an angle of 40 o. Find
the interatomic distance of the target.
Solve the time independent Schrodinger equation in one
dimension for the motion of a particle with mass m and
10 CO3 BL3
4 confined in an infinite potential between x=0 and x=L.
Compute the energies and wavefunctions of the
quantized states.

(a) What is quantum confinement? Discuss 1D, 2D

and 3D quantum confinements using density of 5
states.
CO3 BL5
5 (b) Electrons with energies of 0.5eV are strike a a
potential barrier of 1 eV hight and 0.1nm wide.
Compute the approximate probability for these 5
electrons to penetrate the barrier.
