14. In the current financial year of a city, the amount of salaries tax charged for a citizen is calculated
according to the following rules:

Net chargeable income ($) Rate

On the first 40 000 6%
On the next 40 000 12%
On the next 40 000 19%
Remainder 27%

(1) Net chargeable income = Annual income – Basic allowance

(2) Basic allowance of a single citizen is $ 135 000

(a) Let $P ( P >120000) be the annual income of a citizen. If the citizen has to pay salaries tax
not less than $0.22P, express the amount of salaries tax payable for the citizen in terms of P.
Hence find the least annual income of the citizen. (6 marks)

(b) The annual income of Amy is$ 335 000.

(i) Find the salaries tax payable. (5 marks)

(ii) In order to pay her salaries tax, Amy begins to save money 12 months before the due day of paying
salaries tax. A deposit of $9 000 is saved in a bank on the first day of the 1st, the 4th, the 7th and
the 10th month at an interest rate of 4% per annum, compounded quarterly. There are totally 4
deposits. Will Amy have enough money to pay her salaries tax on the due day? Explain your
answer. (5 marks)
