ECL2301 Diagnostic Equipment (45 Lecture Hours)

Prerequisites: AAB2250 Human Anatomy and Physiology

Contact hours: 45

Purpose
This course unit is designed to equip the candidate with the knowledge and skills of the
general diagnostic equipment.

Objectives
1. describe the diagnostic procedures
2. explain the operation of a diagnostic set
3. explain the principle operation of diagnostic equipment.
4. explain the optical system of a microscope.
5. carry out maintenance procedures of diagnostic equipment

Course description
Diagnostic: Introduction, need for diagnosis, diagnostic procedure, application. Diagnostic
set: principle of operation, parts of diagnostic set, maintenance, calibration, safety
procedures. Stethoscope: principle of operation, maintenance, safety rocedures.
Sphygmomanometer: types, operation principle, parts of sphygmomanometer, calibration,
maintenance procedure, safety. Thermometers: principle of operation, types, parts,
maintenance, safety procedures. Pulse Oximeter: principle of operation, maintenance,
safety procedures. Microscope: types, constructional features, optical systems, common
faults, maintenance.

Teaching methodology: lectures, tutorials and practical

Instructional Materials/ Equipment:


Text books, journals, audio-visual materials, illustration charts for demonstration

Course Assessment: A final examination and continuous assessments which will constitute
60% and 40% of the total unit score respectively.
