On July 28, 2024, the Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing of Bee Enn College of
Nursing organized an event to commemorate World Hepatitis Day, observed globally to raise
awareness about viral hepatitis and its prevention. The event was held at the Government
Medical College (GMC), Jammu, and actively involved the M.Sc. Nursing 1st-year students,
medical and nursing staff of GMC Jammu. The theme for this year’s World Hepatitis Day,
"It’s Time For Action" emphasized the urgency of eliminating hepatitis and the critical role of
healthcare professionals in the fight against it.
Objectives:
- To increase awareness about the global burden of hepatitis and its impact on health.
- To educate nursing students on the latest developments in hepatitis care and prevention.
- To promote active participation of students in spreading awareness within the community.
Activities Conducted:
1. *Inauguration Ceremony*:
The event began with a formal inauguration by SMT. Kusum Lata Academic Coordinator of
Bee Enn College of Nursing. In her welcome address, she spoke about the significance of
World Hepatitis Day and the pivotal role that nurses play in disease prevention, patient care,
and public health awareness.
2. *Guest Lecture :
A special lecture was delivered by Dr. Narinder Bhatial medical superintendent GMC
Jammu. The session covered topics such as Hepatitis Transmission, Prevention and Control
Measures, and The Role of Vaccination in Reducing Hepatitis Incidences. He also highlighted
current treatment options for chronic hepatitis and the importance of early diagnosis through
screening programs. The interactive nature of the lecture allowed students to engage and ask
questions related to their clinical experiences.
3. *Student Presentations*:
The M.Sc. Nursing 1st-year students were divided into groups to present on various aspects
of hepatitis, including:
- Global and National Burden of Hepatitis
- Preventive Measures and Vaccination Strategies
- The Role of Nurses in Hepatitis Care and Management
Each presentation was followed by an open discussion, where students shared their insights
and debated various approaches to improve patient outcomes.
4. *Hepatitis Awareness Campaign*:
The students participated in a hepatitis awareness campaign at GMC Jammu, where they
engaged with patients, staff, and visitors in the outpatient departments. They distributed
informative brochures, highlighting the importance of vaccination, hygiene practices, and
regular medical check-ups to prevent the spread of hepatitis. The students also conducted
brief educational talks for small groups of people, focusing on the prevention and treatment
of hepatitis B and C, the most prevalent forms of the disease in India.
5. *Interactive Workshop*:
A hands-on workshop was conducted to train students on proper infection control practices,
particularly those related to hepatitis prevention in hospital settings. The workshop included a
demonstration of safe handling of blood and body fluids, use of personal protective
equipment (PPE), and the importance of universal precautions.
6. *Closing Ceremony*:
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Aqib Iqbal student of M.Sc. nursing 1st year
Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing. He praised the enthusiasm and commitment of the
students and encouraged them to take the lessons learned forward into their clinical practice
and public health initiatives.
CONCLUSION:
The Hepatitis Day celebration was a highly educational experience for the students. They
gained deeper insights into the global impact of hepatitis, the importance of prevention
strategies, and the critical role they play as future nurses. Through interactive sessions,
presentations, and community outreach activities, the students enhanced their understanding
of hepatitis care, which will benefit their professional development. The campaign conducted
at GMC Jammu also allowed students to directly contribute to public health education,
reinforcing the vital connection between nursing and community care.
