1. The following are the number of road accidents that occurs during the various days of the
week at Prithivi Highway. Find whether the accidents are uniformly distributed over the
week.
Day Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
No. of 14 16 8 12 11 9 14
accidents

2. A doctor believes that the proportions of births in this country on each day of the week are
equal. A simple random sample of 700 births from a recent year is selected, and the results
are below. At a significance level of 0.01, is there enough evidence to support the doctor’s
claim?
Day Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
Frequenc 65 103 114 116 115 112 75

3. In an experiment to study the dependence of hypertension on smoking habits, the following

data were taken on 180 individuals:
Non-Smokers Moderate smokers Heavy Smokers
Hypertension 21 36 30
No Hypertension 48 26 19
Test the hypothesis that presence and absence of hypertension is independent of smoking
habits.
4. To determine whether there is really is a relationship between an employee’s performance in
the company’s training program and his or her ultimate success in the job, the company takes
a sample of 400 cases from its very extensive files and obtains the results shown in the
following table:
Performance in training
Success in job
Below average Average Above average
Poor 23 60 29
Average 28 79 60
Very good 9 49 63
Use 1% level of significance to test that performance in the training program and success in
the job are dependent.
5. Twelve hundred adults were selected from each of the three cities (Kathmandu, Pokhara,
Biratnagar) of Nepal, and they were asked which mode of payment they prefer. The choices

Mobile payments 180 175 168
Credit cards 68 50 59
Cash 42 46 44
Based on the evidence from these samples, can you conclude that the distributions of favorite
mode of payment are associated with surveyed cities? Use α = .05.
6. A survey amongst youths was conducted to study the family life. The observations are as
follows:
Family life
Happy Not happy
Graduated 110 50
Not graduated 180 50
Test whether there is any association between family life and educational status.

Male 40 20
Female 10 30

8. The following table lists the frequency of houses sold in Pokhara city during the past 8
months.
Months Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug
No. of houses 300 250 350 320 335 290 300 310
Using 5% level of significance, will you conclude that the number of houses sold in a given
city is the same for each month?
9. A set of five unbiased coins were tossed 3200 times and the observed no. of heads were
as follows.
No. of heads 0 1 2 3 4 5
Frequency 100 550 1050 950 500 50
Fit expected frequency and test goodness of fit.
10. Fit a poisson distribution to the following data and test the goodness of fit.
X 0 1 2 3 4
f 120 60 15 4 1
11. A.S. Parkes gives the distribution of the number of males in litters of piglets.
No of Males 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Frequency 1 8 37 81 162 77 20 5 1
Calculate theoretical frequencies on the hypothesis that the probability of a piglet being
male is ½. Group together the first two and last two frequencies; how many degrees of
freedom remain? What is the value of 2 Comment upon goodness of fit.
