FUNDAMENTAL CANONS
The Fundamental Canons provide civil engineers the ethical principles
to ensure their profession upholds ethical and professional conduct
while developing community. These guidelines assure that civil
engineers act appropriately, protect the public, while advancing the
field in a morally and sustainable manner.

1. 1.Consider the well-being, safety, and health of the people first

whilst implementing sustainable practices. In their job, civil
engineers must take sustainable practices into account and
safeguard both people and the environment. Designing flood-
resistant housing using environmentally friendly materials to
lessen its impact on the environment is one example.
2. Perform only what you know how to do. To reduce risks and errors,
engineers should only work on projects for which they have
received the necessary training. A structural engineer, for
instance, shouldn't design electrical systems since it is outside of
their area of competence.
3. Make honest and fair public assertions. Facts must be presented
by engineers objectively and without bias. This includes providing
an accurate evaluation of a dam's structural problems to prevent
deceiving interested parties.
4. Work as devoted individuals for clients or companies and remain
free in conflicts of interest. Engineers must act morally, ensuring
that their choices are not driven by self-interest. One example
would be recommending building supplies that balance quality and
pricing rather than ones that offer certain incentives.
5. Establish an outstanding reputation by fair competition and
excellence. Engineers must be acknowledged for their abilities and
refrain from belittling others. For instance, concentrating on
producing high-quality work rather than making false claims about
another organization's creativity.
6. Respect the profession's honor and dignity. Maintaining the
reputation of the engineering profession requires engineers to act
morally, responsibly, and legally. Reporting a coworker who
authorizes substandard supplies for personal benefit is one
example.
7. Maintain a lifelong learning process throughout their professional
lives and help others advance their professions. Engineers should
continue to grow as individuals and mentor others in their area.
One can do this by attending seminars on new construction
technology and sharing experience with younger engineers.
