My  buddy  said  he  would  like  a  new  warm  hat  
for  hunting  season,  and  I’m  never  one  to  
back  away  from  a  design  challenge.  This  hat  
was  designed  with  a  double  brim  to  be  extra  
warm  for  anyone  spending  time  outside  in  
winter  here  in  the  Great  White  North.    
 
 
This  hat  fits  an  average  man’s  head;  23  
inches    (58  cm)  
 
Materials:  
Worsted  Weight  category  4  yarn  (using  a  
yarn  with  a  good  wool  content  will  
definitely  be  warmer)  
4.0  mm  16’  circular  needles  
4.5  mm  16’  circular  needles  
4.5  mm  dpns  for  decrease  
yarn  needle  
 
Abbreviations:  
K-­‐  Knit  
P-­‐  Purl  
K2TOG  –  knit  2  stitches  together  
P2TOG  –  purl  2  stitches  together  
 
Gauge  in  pattern  (not  stretched)  on  4.5mm:  21  stitches  x  24  rows  =  4  inches    (10  
cm)  
 
 
Cast  on  90  stitches  using  a  long  tail  cast  on  4.0  mm.  
 
Double  Brim    
Round  1-­‐12:  *K1,  P1;  repeat  from  *  for  entire  rnd  
Round  13:  Purl  all  stiches  
Round  14-­‐26:  *K1,  P1;  repeat  from  *  for  entire  rnd  
Round  27:  Fold  your  cast  on  end  up  to  your  current  working  edge  on  the  inside  (pic  
A),  slip  your  left  needle  into  the  first  stitch  of  your  cast  on  edge  and  knit  the  two  
stitches  together,  joining  the  two  edges.  (pic  B)Continue  this  way,  picking  up  a  cast  
on  stitch  with  a  live  stitch  and  knitting  them  together  all  the  way  around.  (pictures  
at  end  of  pattern)

Note:  to  save  time  you  can  tuck  your  starting  end  into  the  double  brim  saving  yourself  
another  end  to  weave  in!  
 
Body  
Switch  to  4.5  mm  needles.  Work  pattern  below  a  total  of  5  times  
 
Pattern:  
Round  1  –  *K2,  P1;  repeat  from  *  for  entire  rnd  
Round  2  –  *K2,  P1;  repeat  from  *  for  entire  rnd  
Round  3  –  *K2,  P1;  repeat  from  *  for  entire  rnd  
Round  4  –  P  all  stitches  
 
Decrease    
(switching  to  dpns  when  needed)  
 
Round  1  –  *K2,  P1,  K2,  P1,  K2TOG,  P1;  rep  from  *  for  entire  rnd  (80  sts  rem)  
Round  2  –  *K2,  P1,  K2,  P1,  K1,  P1;  rep  from  *  for  entire  rnd  
Round  3  –  *K2,  P1,  K2,  P1,  P2TOG;  rep  from  *  for  entire  rnd  (70  sts  rem)  
Round  4  –  P  entire  rnd  
Round  5  –  *K2,  P1,  K2,  P2TOG;  rep  from  *  for  entire  rnd  (60  sts  rem)  
Round  6  –  *K2,  P1,  K2,  P1;  rep  from  *  for  entire  rnd  
Round  7  –  *K2,  P1,  K2TOG,  P1;  rep  from  *  for  entire  rnd  (50  sts  rem)  
Round  8  –  P  entire  rnd  
Round  9  –  *K2,  P1,P2TOG:  rep  from  *  for  entire  rnd  (40  sts  rem)

Round  11  –  *K2,  P2TOG:  rep  from  *  for  entire  rnd  (30  sts  rem)  
Round  12  –  P  entire  rnd  
Round  13  –  *K2TOG,  P1:  rep  from  *  for  entire  rnd  (20  sts  rem)  
Round  14  –  *K2TOG;  entire  rnd  (10  sts  rem)  
 
Cut  the  yarn  leaving  a  tail  to  pull  through  the  remaining  stitches  and  weave  in  ends.
