COMPUTER ARCHITECHTURE AND ORGANISATION ASSIGNMENT

QUESTION 1

C.P.U-It is the brain of the computer and it carries out all processing needed in the computer. The
CPU interacts with other computer components through the system bus it enables communication
with different parts of the computer e.g memory and input and output devices.

Memory- the memory stores data and instructions that enables the CPU to access it quickly. There are
two main types of computer memory that is RAM and ROM. The memory also interacts with other
components of the computer through the system bus.

I/O devices- it enables the computer interact with outside users. Enables users receive information in
different forms. Input devices include, keyboard, mouse and output devices include monitor, printer.
They interact with the computer components by changing data in a way that the computer can
understand.

Storage- Data is stored here for a long period of time. There are different types of storage like hard
drives and external drives. It enables files and programs to be stored safely. It allows the CPU to read
and write data and to also form it. The storage devices work hand in hand with the CPU.

QUESTION 2

1.CPU- The CPU refers to the brain of the computer and it stands for the Central Processing Unit. It
carries out all computer instructions. The CPU has the ability to process data quickly making the
computer efficient.

2.ALU- Performs all arithmetic calculations of the computer.

CU- Directs the flow of data and instructions in the computer. Enables execution of programs.

Registers- They hold data and instructions temporarily awaiting to be processed by the CPU

Cache memory- Improves the speed at which instructions are accessed by the CPU

3. Pipelining allows the CPU to work on many instructions at different phases at the same time
improving its performance.
QUESTION 3
1.The instruction cycle executes a single instruction at a time. Involves fetching the instruction from
the memory and decoding it in order for the computer to understand what should be performed then
executing it and giving back the output. The fetch phase retrieves instruction from the memory while
the decode phase interprets the instruction for the computer to understand.

2. Micro-operation is the smallest operation performed by the CPU to execute instructions. This
operations are basic operations. They play a crucial role in execution of instructions.

3. multiplication of two numbers. The CPU fetches the instruction of multiplication decode it to
understand the operation then execute the multiplication by fetching numbers from the computer
memory and later on storing the information in the computer memory.
