The

Roadmap to
Sustainability
The demands and expectations that businesses
face will keep increasing and are likely to become
even more complex than they are today.

Organisations and executives must develop a

deep understanding of these social and
environmental issues and continuously monitor
their impact on society, on policy and on the world
of business.

Sustainability Leaders are fundamentally better

positioned to thrive financially while at the same time
having a positive social and environmental impact.

However, two
broader
questions
remain open:

Have we framed and

To tackle the first question, the

To tackle the second question, companies need to

Sustainability Leadership entails a profound

transformational experience. It's about:

Re-thinking and changing the identity of the organisation

Changing the culture, norms and values of the organisation

Delivering financial returns and positive social impact, by

accounting for risks, opportunities and obligations

Needs to be led by executives who are committed to

building a better and more sustainable world

These organisational transformations are usually led

by executives who understand a few basic principles.
Business organisations at their core are problem solvers.
They find a problem or gap in the market and then innovate
products and services to fill this gap or to meet these needs.

Sustainability Leadership is fundamentally based

on an expanded and forward-looking understanding
of the role of the corporation in society, with respect

Sustainability leaders do
not only pay attention to
social and environmental
issues, but also:

1. Implement distinct governance mechanisms

• Directly involve the board in sustainability issues and

link executive compensation to sustainability objectives

2. Display higher and deeper level of stakeholder

engagement

• Coupled with mechanisms for making it as effective as

possible, including reporting

3. Adopt a longer-term time horizon in their

external communications which are….

• In their external communications which is matched by a

larger proportion of long-term investors in their stock

4. Pay attention to non-financial measures

regarding employees and monitor suppliers

• A greater emphasis on external environmental and

social standards for selecting, monitoring and
measuring the performance of their suppliers

5. Are more transparent in the disclosure of their

non-financial information

• Gather and disclose ESG metrics as well as financial

ones

These are the key distinguishing

features of

As we learned in this course, these have huge implications on how

an organisation functions, innovates, builds trust and long-term
relationships with its stakeholders, what the brand stands for, and
how an organisation perceives itself and its role in society.

As problem-solvers,
Sustainability Leaders
can and do contribute
towards the resolution
of some of the world's
biggest problems

“Sustainability Leadership will

fundamentally lead to better companies
that are able to balance out the need to
thrive financially while at the same time
have a positive social and environmental
impact.”
