Message from the Chair,

On behalf of the Tri-Valley Conservancy Board of Directors, we thank you for your continued support. Because of your generosity Tri-Valley Conservancy has: Ensured that over 4,100 acres are under agricultural conservation easements, including 1,900 acres that support the South Livermore Valley Trail System Completed a conservation plan for the entire Tri-Valley Region Launched two education programsone in support of local viticulture, the other for local olive growers. Our work touches the lives of everyone in the Tri-Valley, from families who enjoy riding and walking, to farmers who are able to keep their lands in production, and to our communities who enjoy the surrounding scenic beauty. As we look to the future, we will need your help to take our next steps and add miles of public trails, protect hundreds of acres of wildlife habitat, preserve agriculture and conserve scenic areas for all to enjoy. In the end, future generations will measure our success by the amount of land left for them to enjoy as scenic beauty, public recreation, or local agriculture. We do not inherit this land from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children. Lets leave them something to remember us by.

Our work touches the lives of everyone in the Tri-Valley

Jim Perry

Land Conservation Committee

This past year the Conservancys Board took on the challenge of completing its first comprehensive Land Conservation Plan; the purpose of which is to provide a framework for identifying and evaluating conservation lands with the ultimate goal of preserving our quality of life. The Plan identifies priority landscapes, focusing on the agricultural lands that define the Tri-Valleys heritage as well as the trails and natural habitat the community desires. Together with the Plan, TVC developed maps to identify existing public and/or privately protected land, endangered and threatened species, existing and proposed trails, habitat and vegetation, risks for development, prime farmland and watersheds. The Conservancy also hired a fundraising consultant to help identify key partners and provide strategy to raise the $14 million price tag for the implementation of the Land Conservation Plan. Thank you to Jean King, Mary Roberts, Karl Wente, Bill Hoppes and Jon Harvey, who served on this committee with me in 2007. Chair: William D. Thomson

Resource Development Committee

We spent 2007 in support of driving our mission to areas of preservation outside of the South Livermore Valley Area Plan. Most of our current financial resources are restricted to use exclusively within the SLVAP. In 2007, we looked to the future, and actively engaged our entire board and staff in forward financial planning for expanded conservation in the Tri-Valley. The result of this years work is a three-year fundraising plan.It includes a major donor program; board training; message and branding enhancement; and a strengthening of our membership program. Our initial implementation of the fundraising plan is already showing results. TVC is experiencing a 20% increase in donations, compared to 2006 donations. In addition, our donors are renewing at a 55% rate, compared to 16% rate in 2006.

We are committed to the permanent protection of lands that are critical to the health of the environment.

In September, our traditional annual BBQ delivered more success. There were 110 supporters in attendance at Eagle Ridge Winery in Livermore. Fundraising events like this cannot take place without the commitment and dedication of many people. We are ever thankful to our volunteers for their hard work. 2007 also brought us to our third year of a three-year partnership with the Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association. The Taste of Terroir wine and food event has become a premier educational and social event in the Tri-Valley area. The 2007 event sold out a week before the event took place. TVC is proud to have played a part in the making of the Taste of Terroir. Thank you to Miriam Miller and Michael Princevalle who served on this committee with me in 2007. Chair: H.R. Hansen, Jr.

Board Development Committee

This committee met regularly during the past year to discuss the involvement of all directors in the activities and goals of the Conservancy, to select new candidates for directorship, and to make recommendations for improving the Boards committee structure. Setting the goal that all directors would make a personal donation to TVC was accomplished. Last year, Tri-Valley Conservancy joined 31 other land trusts across the country in providing leadership for the national land trust movement. We succeeded in the Land Trust Alliances Board Member Challenge by encouraging board members to join the Land Trust Alliance (LTA) as individual members, adding much needed strength to the national work that will affect local land conservation across the country. With 100% of TVCs board members joining LTA, Tri-Valley joined just nine other land trusts nationwide that met the highest mark in the Challenge 100% participation. Thank you to Jean King and Michael Princevalle who served on this committee with me in 2007. Chair: William D. Thomson

The Tri-Valley Conservancy will continue to focus on permanently protecting lands that preserve the areas rural character, scenic beauty, and diverse environmental resources. Protecting these lands, we envision that both human life and wildlife can survive and thrive. We will work in partnership with local landowners, the community, nonprofit organizations, conservation agencies and local, regional, state and federal government agencies to protect two major wildlife and biological corridors along the Pleasanton and Altamont Ridges. We will protect lands that will allow people to hike, bike, and walk throughout the hills and vineyards to enjoy the land, thereby being motivated to protect it. We will promote long-term stewardship of local lands that will result in safeguarding agriculture and water resources of the Tri-Valley area.
