3. All the answers must be correctly numbered as in the question paper and written in the answer sheet
provided to you.
4. Attempt all questions in each section before going on to the next section.
5. Read each question carefully and follow the instructions.
6. Strictly adhere to the word limit given with each question.
7. The question paper has been divided into three sections:
Sections A: Reading 10 Marks
Sections B: Writing & Grammar 10 Marks
Section C: Literature/ Textbooks 20 Marks
Section A: Reading (10 marks)

Q.1. Read the passage carefully.

1. Without comprehension, reading is a frustrating, pointless exercise in word calling. It is no

exaggeration to say that how well students develop the ability to comprehend what they read has a
profound effect on their entire lives. A major goal of reading comprehension instruction, therefore, is to
help students develop the knowledge, skills, and experiences they must have if they are to become
competent and enthusiastic readers.

2. One important classroom study conducted during the 1970s found that typical comprehension
instruction followed what the study called a mentioning, practicing and assessing procedure. That is,
teachers mentioned a specific skill that students were to apply, had students practice the skill by
completing workbook pages, and then assessed them to find out if they could use the skill correctly.
But this couldn’t enable comprehension.

3. At about this time, a group of psychologists, linguists and computer scientists began to focus
research attention on how the mind works –how people think and learn. A goal of this new research
movement, called cognitive science, was to produce an applied science of learning.

4. In the field of reading, a group of cognitive scientists focused their attention on how readers
construct meaning as they read. Specifically, they studied the mental activities that good readers
engage in to achieve comprehension. From these studies an entirely new concept emerged about what
reading is. According to the new concept, reading is a complex, active process of constructing meaning
–not skill application.

5. During reading good readers read words accurately and quickly and simultaneously deal with the
meanings of those words – as well as the meanings of the phrases and sentences into which the words
are grouped. Good readers connect the meaning of one sentence to the meaning of another. If
something confusing to them, they use their background knowledge to try to clarify the meaning of the
words and phrases.

6. In contrast to the good readers, most poor readers do not read strategically. Nor do they have
sufficient metacognitive awareness. They rarely prepare before reading, they often begin without
setting goals. They may have trouble determining word meanings. After reading, poor readers typically
do not think about or reflect upon what they have read, they almost never seek out additional
information about a topic.

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer ANY FIVE questions from the six given
below? [5×1=5]

(i) How does the reading have an important role to shape up one’s entire life?
(ii) What was the result of the classroom study conducted during 1970?
(iii) What do you understand by the term cognitive science?
(iv) What were the findings of cognitive scientists in the field of reading?
(v) What is important for good reading? Write any two reasons in the support to your answer.
(vi) State any two reasons that are responsible for poor reading.

Q.2. Read the following passage carefully.

Deforestation
Forests are an important part of civilization. They not only form a considerable portion of the national
wealth of a country but also play an important role in maintaining the environmental balance.
Deforestation is a major problem: every minute, we lose about 36 football fields worth of trees.
Indiscriminate felling of trees to enhance city areas is a threat to our civilization. We often forget that a
peaceful, sensitive and well- balanced co-existence of man-made civilization and natural flora and
fauna is absolutely important for human existence on the earth. We forget that deforestation for the
urbanization project led to the destruction of past civilizations such as Mohenjo-Daro.

Indiscriminate felling of trees not only leaves our planet with fewer trees but also threatens the wildlife
of the region. Forests and trees have an enormous impact on the climate as they are instrumental in
drawing rain to the earth. Deforestation has resulted radical changes in our climate. The overall
temperature of the planet is increasing at an alarming rate. The duration of seasons is fluctuating all
over the world. The rate of rainfall is decreasing day by day. The ice-caps at the poles are melting as a
result. The amount of cultivable land is reducing as a result of deforestation and less rainfall. The future
of this planet is in trouble unless immediate attention is paid to this danger.

Thousands of species of plants and animals are fast disappearing from the face of our earth as a result
of human callousness. Forests in the mountains play an important role in preventing erosion and
landslides. Felling of tress in the hilly regions endangers the lives of people who live there. However,
the silver lining is that several people are becoming aware of this danger. A number of environment
activist groups are undertaking a campaign to save forests.

Afforestation and preservation of wildlife can be an answer to this environmental crisis. By planting
new trees, we can slowly restore the environmental balance that was disturbed by deforestation.
Though the process is long term, yet it is sure to save our planet from extinction. A thorough mass
awareness against deforestation and preservation of wildlife is the call of the hour. It is only through
mass sensitization and participation that this aim can be realized in future.
