Online Chinese Course Policy

Part One Assignment Policy

Your assignments account for an important part of your final grades in this course.
So please make sure you'll complete the daily assignments on time and with high
quality.

1. Suggested Due Dates & Time

Assignments for the next week will be updated before 11:59 p.m. (EST) every Friday
and the suggested due time for weekly assignments is set on every Sunday 11:59
p.m. (EST). You have at least 8 days to complete the assignments for each week.

2. Missing Work
If you miss part of the work for an assignment, you still can make them up in the
Brightspace after communicating with your instructors, but your grades may be
marked down.

3. How to Name the Attachments

When you upload any attachment such as a recording, word document or picture,
please name it as “Your Full Name-Assignment Code”. For example, “John Snow-
Preview 2.2.1”.

4. Accepted Formats of Your Attachments

Please save your attachments as following formats, otherwise I may not be able to
open them and your grades will be affected.
(1) Word Document --- *doc./*.docx
(2) Audio file --- *.mp3/*.wav/*.wma
(3) Picture file ---*.jpg/*.png

5. Cheating is not permitted in any assignment.

What is cheating?
1) The assignments are exactly the same as someone else.
2) Use 30% or above new grammar or vocabulary which is not the students'
level.
3) You are permitted to use an online dictionary to translate some single words
you don't know. But it is not allowed to use an online translator to translate
the whole sentences or passages.
4) There might be other ways to give evidence of cheating.

What’s the consequence of cheating?

1) The first time the instructor suspects cheating, the student will be warned
and the instructor will report the issue to his/her supervisor or parent.
2) If the cheating continues, 50% of the student’s grades will be taken off and
he/she will receive a second warning.
3) If it happens for the third time, the student’s work will be marked zero and
the instructor will report the issue to his/her supervisor or parent.

6. Assignment Grading
Please give the instructor three business days to grade and make comments on your
daily assignments after the suggested due date. Please read the feedback on your
assignments carefully, which would help you improve your Chinese and avoid the
same mistakes next time.

7. Upload Assignments
When you unload your assignments, don’t forget to click “submit”.
After uploading your assignments, please double check whether you've uploaded
them successfully. If you can't, please contact the Michigan Virtual Customer
Care team to report the problem immediately. Meanwhile please send your
assignments via message or email to make sure I receive a copy. It’s highly
recommended that you complete all your assignments in a Microsoft Word
document first, then copy and paste them in the submission area, in case that
some technical problems may occur when submitting your assignments.

8. Message and Email

If you have questions about the assignments, please label the subject of message or
email as Full Name-Assignment Codes (e.g. Elizabeth Ng-Preview 2.2.1).

9. No Re-do Assignments
Re-do assignments after they have been graded is not allowed in this course.

10. Marking and Grades

CI-MSU reserves all the rights for the final decision of the standard answers of all
the assignments, quizzes, tests and exams.

Part Two Lab Session Policy

1. Attendance
Please attend the lab session on time and engage yourself actively in the class, since
it’s the only chance to interact with your instructor and classmates online every
week.

2. Absence for Lab Session

You may contact your instructors for absence from a lab session due to emergency
or medical reasons. However, you need to have your mentor or parent inform the
instructor why you are absent via message or email at your earliest convenience. If
you fail to inform your instructor, your lab session participation points will be
deducted.

3. Make up for the Lab Session

Once you miss the lab session, you can either attend other available lab sessions
during the same week or make up for it by submitting a lab report based on the
specific instructions. Your instructor will grade the make-up lab report.

4. Lab Session Calendar

In our lab session, we follow the MV's academic calendar instead of your school's
calendar. Thus, if the last date of your school’s semester is earlier than ours, please
let me know in advance so that I can reschedule the final exam for you.
5. Lab Session Grading
Lab Session Policy (20 points)

Attendance (10 points) Participation (10 points)

Absent 0 No engagement 0

Late within 15 minutes 5-8 Low collaboration 5-8

On time 10 Active 10

There are 20 points for the lab session every week consisting of two parts, including
10 points for attendance and 10 points for participation. So please attend the lab
session on time and be active during the lab.
During the lab, the instructor may pose some questions you’ve learned (especially
those related to the assignments you’re supposed to complete already). If you can’t
give the right answers to most of the questions, your grades will be affected.
Therefore, please review the previous knowledge before each lab session.

Part Three Final Exam Policy

Final Exam will only be available during the designated days and it MUST be
proctored – no exceptions. “Proctored” means that a mentor is supervising the test
as the student is taking it. And there is ONLY ONE attempt for each student. Thus,
students should complete the final exam (both the written exam and the oral test)
based on the confirmed date and time agreed upon by both parties (student and
instructor). There is NO CHANCE to make up if students miss the final exam,
which means the students missing the final exam will get no credit for it.
