DSD MK2 Firmware Upgrade Guide

What You Need to Start

o USB thumb drive
o The DirectStream_DAC_MK2_v3.2.1 with_Blue Sky.zip file from the PS Audio website.
o Ensure your DSD MK2 is plugged in during the upgrade.

There are two methods to update firmware. The first method allows you put multiple versions
on a USB thumb drive and select the version you want from the menus. The second method
(the legacy method), allows you put a specific version on the thumb drive and update to that
version without going into the menus.

Which file to use

o dsdmk2_v3.2.1 with Blue Sky Auto Load.zip – This zip file is included inside the
original dsdmk2_v3.2.1 with Blue Sky.zip file. Use this if you are updating
automatically from a thumb drive (see Method 1). This method must be used if you
are on a version before 3.1.0.
o dsd_mk2_v3.2.1.bin and fpga1_239_BlueSky.bin- Use these two files if you are
updating through the FW Update option in the system menus (see Method 2). You
must be running 3.1.0 or above to use this method.

Method 1: Upgrading automatically using an image.bin

Prepare the thumb drive
o On your PC or Mac, unzip contents of the dsd_mk2_vX.Y.Z.zip file.
o Inside the folder, there is a second zip file named dsdmk2_v3.2.1 with Blue Sky Auto
Load.zip.
o Unzip this file. It will create a directory named dsdmk2_v3.2.1 with Blue Sky Auto
Load.
o Go into this directory and copy all the files (there will be two files) to your thumb
drive.
o Place the thumb drive in the back of the DSD MK2, in the slot marked FW.

Upgrade Main Firmware

o Using the front panel Logo LED button, place the unit in standby.
o Using the switch in the back of the unit, power the unit off, then power it back on.
o The Logo will be solid blue, then blink rapidly. It should blink around 25 to 30 times.
o The update will complete and the unit will immediately initialize.
o A pop-up will appear indicating the FPGA is being updated to the new Blue Sky
Mountaintop load.
o At the end of this process, the dialog will ask you to reboot the unit. Select Yes.
o The unit will reboot. The main firmware and FPGA firmware has now been updated.
o PS Audio recommends you remove the thumb drive from the back of the unit

Method 2: FW Update through the System Menu

This method can only be used if you are running 3.1.0 or above. It can be used to put multiple
versions on a zip file and upgrade and downgrade between them. When initially updating to v3.1.0,
Method 1 must be used.

Prepare the thumb drive

o On your PC or Mac, unzip contents of the dsd_mk2_vX.Y.Z.zip file and copy the
appropriate bin file to your USB thumb drive. The X.Y.Z is the version of the software,
for example, dsd_mk2_v2.5.0.bin
o You can have multiple versions of the FPGA code on the thumb drive. They must all
start with dsd_mk2_ and have the version specified as vX.Y.Z as in the example
above.
o You can also copy multiple versions of Mountaintop releases to the thumb drive.
These should be named fpga1_<ver>_<name>.bin. For example, Blue Sky is named
fpga1_239_BlueSky.bin.
o Remove the thumb drive from your computer.
o Place the thumb drive in the back of the DSD MK2, in the slot marked FW.

FW Update from the System Menu

o After the unit has fully booted, enter the menus (long press the menu button).
o Scroll right to the System sub-menu.
o Press the center nav button to enter the System sub-menu.
o Scroll right to the FW Update sub-menu.
o Press the center nav button to enter the FW Update sub-menu.
o You will see the FPGA Load screen.
o Scroll right to go to the FW Update screen.
o Scroll up/ down to select the version on the USB thumbdrive you want to update to.
o Press the center nav button to select the file.
o A status screen will appear with details of the FW Update process.
o The unit will reboot
o The Logo will be solid blue, then blink rapidly. It should blink around 25 to 30 times.
o The firmware will start, displaying the PS Audio splash screen.
o You can go back into the menus and scroll right to the Version screen to verify the
new version is loaded.
Upgrade FPGA Firmware to Blue Sky

o Scroll right to the System sub-menu.
o Press the center nav button to enter the System sub-menu.
o Scroll right to the FW Update sub-menu.
o Press the center nav button to enter the FW Update sub-menu.
o You will see the FPGA Load screen.
o Press the center nav button to select fpga1_239_BlueSky.bin file (or whichever FPGA
release you choose).
o A status screen will appear with details of the FPGA load process.

Finish and Reboot

o The firmware has been successfully updated!
o A pop-up will display asking to reboot the unit.
o Press the center nav button and the unit will auto-reboot. You do not need to power
cycle on the back panel.
o Once the unit has rebooted, enter the menus and scroll right to the Versions screen.
o Scroll down to verify the FPGA version says 239-Blue Sky.

Troubleshooting
➢ In some cases, the unit may freeze on the PS Audio splash screen. If this happens,
remove the USB drive from the back of the unit and power cycle the unit, then replace
the USB drive if necessary.
➢ It is okay to leave the thumb drive in the unit. The unit will detect the firmware is the
same and skip the update. However, PS Audio recommends that the USB thumb drive be
removed during normal operation of the device.
➢ For Mac users, if the unit doesn't recognize your thumb drive, be sure to format it for
FAT32 and not EXFAT.
➢ If nothing appears in the FW Update menu, try powering the unit off in the back,
inserting the USB stick, then powering it back on and returning to the menu.
